“They’ll be supplying us from Clermont (Quebec) instead of from Mersey, so it really doesn’t affect us any,” Scott said. “We’ve been supplied by Clermont for years.”Newspaper also first client in 1929
The Chronicle Herald was the Bowater Mersey paper mill’s first and last customer.
When the Brooklyn pulp mill opened in 1929, the newspaper set up a small printing press on-site as a demonstration. And it will take delivery next week of the last paper made at the now-shuttered mill.
“They were told to stop making paper on Wednesday or Thursday and they were just finishing up our order,” said Ian Scott, The Chronicle Herald’s vice-president of operations.
The bulk of the Mersey mill’s product was made for export, he said.
“The export markets have been swamped by Chinese paper,” Scott said.
That, coupled with the waning demand for newsprint, both nationally and internationally, hit Bowater Mersey hard, he said.
This newspaper will continue to source paper from Quebec-based Resolute Forest Products, which owns 51 per cent of the Queens County mill.
“They’ll be supplying us from Clermont (Quebec) instead of from Mersey, so it really doesn’t affect us any,” Scott said. “We’ve been supplied by Clermont for years.”
Resolute supplies about half the paper used by The Chronicle Herald.
“When the Mersey mill was up and running, we bought 50 per cent of our supply from the Mersey mill,” Scott said.
But it turned to other Resolute mills for paper during multiple shutdowns over the past few years at Bowater Mersey.
Irving-owned newspapers in New Brunswick, which bought newsprint from Bowater Mersey, indicated Friday that they will also rely on other Resolute mills.
The Chronicle Herald also buys newsprint from Kruger in Newfoundland and is testing paper from Great Northern in Millinocket, Maine.
“Obviously the industry’s in rocky straits,” Scott said. “I’ve been diversifying my sources.”
No, it won't affect you at all. Fuck, get me off this planet.
