If you are actually using the lawn space, ie kids/dogs/sports, then it is worthwhile to maintain for sure.
That's basically what I'm trying to say. Yes, I think a lawn that doesn't get used is a total waste of time/money, but it's not if you use it. It would be difficult to hold an event such as hoptoberfest in a vegetable garden . I'm not saying a lawn is necessary for this, but a vegetable garden isn't the best use of space if you're trying to have a group of people over and spend time outside hanging around in the yard.

A patio, flagstone, maybe slabs of slate, with shrubs around is nice for that. Doesn't get muddy when it rains, doesn't need mowing.

Jimmy, Becky - Have you considered a pallet garden?

Fresh veggies, minimal work, next to no weeding.

I agree.

That's actually what our original intent was. We'd like to do the whole back yard in stone, but it would cost us a fortune.

Agreed. We get a ton of use out of our backyard, which is probably close to 2 acres worth of lawn. Myself and the two kids are always outdoors when the weather is nice. We use it quite a bit for entertaining as well. We do have a vegetable garden as well, it's just off to the side and out of the way.

We haven't. We were thinking raised planters for aesthetics and practicality - possible adding benches to one side of the planter to use them as seats.

If you Google it, you'll see that a lot of people put them on an incline too, meaning even less of a footprint too, if you are tight for space. Of course then you have to put a back on it, so the soil doesn't fall out...

Breakfast early in the morning on a flagstone patio with roses and shrubs around perhaps, and turn the rest of the back yard into a vegetable garden or orchard? perhaps also a pergola with hop vines growing over it for midday shade.

A neighbourly dispute in Pickering, Ont., that escalated from a complaint over lawn maintenance to the dumping of a coyote carcass on an old man’s truck has now been well and truly settled by the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Not to put a damper on pallet garden but I some pallets have nasty preservatives in them. Cool idea though, especially on an incline..

Hmm, not surprising really... I guess it depends on who put it together - here's another idea.

I have started growing vegetables right under the front window, and have plans to expand, time permitting, until there is no grass. I see the trend in my own neighborhood, grass replaced with gardens and shrubs.

Allot of home ownership things are not that fun but I do them because I take pride in my property. Yes I get that you can take pride and not mow but who wants to be that neighbour. I'd flatten your tires if you were that guy. Kidding! :cheers2:

No worries - I didn't take it personally & like I said in an earlier post - I totally agree with the 'grassy' yard for kids to run and play. Also, I would like my front yard to be a little more level - more for mowing ease than anything else. You'll never catch me putting the sprinkler to it though - it grows fast enough as it is.

I still agree with X tho - grass seems like a futile waste of time and energy. I enjoy gardening and growing stuff I can eat and it seems like a more productive use of time and space to me.

 I never water mine either. I prefer not to have to mow every 2-3 days. Once a week is more than enough for me.

It is, but I'm not the sole owner. I split on it with my mother and uncle. Couldn't justify $900 for the size of my lawn.
