Pisses me off when these politicians who don't know crap about industry have the audacity to cop an attitude, and then toss out a phrase like 'buzzword' because they don't know what to say. I got some buzzwords for you fat-ass, 'hot-idle' and 'sysco'....grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Bob Bancroft is a knob. Telling people they 'just have to get used to coyotes in their yards' is fucking bullshit. I'm all for not encroaching on wildlife and that kind of tree hugging, but AFAIAC, these critters are a cross-bred invasive species, and if this is in my backyard, it's getting lead.

With coyotes getting bigger and more vicious yearly, I still don't understand why we can't carry a pistol in the woods at all.

A friend of mine who know Bancroft well agrees with you.
I also completely agree on the subject of coyotes as invasive species. They don't belong east of the Great Plains - and the ones out there aren't nearly the hazard (or size) of the ones here. For all the mythology surrounding wolves, for all of recorded history they haven't been as dangerous as eastern coyotes.

That's easy - I still feel safer from Coyotes than dumb-ass people.

This cross bred species is becoming a hazard in Manitoba. About a year ago, there was a good story on radio1 about a horse farm having major problems with violent attacks. Something not seen from wolves or bears. Bush-wolves is what they called them. And I unfortunately agree that handguns might not be the answer. Too many yahoos...but on the other hand, on my property...

We had a coyote on an elementary school grounds this week during school hours.
Still don't know yet why the f**k they just frightened it off and never shot it.

While I realize that there are indeed a lot of dumb people out there, Trappers have had the privilege of self defense carry in the woods for eons.

I beleive there is a special permit you can get for carrying a pistol for personnel safety. IIRC, it was targeted towards women and it has never been issued. Something like that.

"May issue" ATC permits. There are 31 in all of Canada last I checked. Lots apply, none get issued.
In the woods is a totally different situation. I'd love to be able to carry a .22 pistol while hunting. If I shoot a deer and walk up on it still alive, a .22 will damage a lot less meat than a second .308 at point blank range.

Sure, and I've known plenty of people I'd trust with anything from a fire-cracker to a tactical nuke. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are stupid, and I'm happier if they're not carrying pistols in the woods. I'd be even happier if _they_ weren't carrying shotguns, but I really don't know how you stop idiots from using hunting weapons without stopping smart people too...

Ugh. I hadn't heard that. The theories I'd heard were that the coyotes had interbred with both dogs & wolves on the way east - but I guess there's no reason those hybrids couldn't be migrating west again.

If there is, maybe they could tag that onto driver's license testing as well…

There's a psych component on the current firearm license application. If you are recently divorced or were fired or anything similar you have to report it, and I have heard of people being turned down for those reasons. That's not very robust, mind you.

Agreed.

I was not aware of that! Although, I recently did do a psych test for a job interview - most of the questions made no sense whatsoever, so I just picked an answer at random. Which does make me question the validity of it. Plus they offered me the job - so clearly they didn't pick up the fact that I used to be like Dexter

Go figure.

I know two people who carry magnums for safety. They used to carry shotguns into the field, but grizzly stopped caring if you fired shots at them. They have a restricted firearms licence, it wasn't that difficult to get. Although, I'm told the guns are a pain in the ass to deal with around campus, but I sure feel safer doing field work with them out west/north then without. As for coyotes I think a shotgun would still work fine, we don't need more handguns around.
I'll take my two seconds here to caution anyone seeking out eradication. The coyotes are so out of control because they are filling in the niche of the wolves we removed from the ecosystem. I don't think the solution is removing them completely, even if they are "invasive". We would just create more complicated problems further down the line, and fuck up our ecosystems worse in the process. That being said, if your kids are at risk you gotta do what must be done.

I don't think we ever had wolves here in Nova Scotia, so these animals are not filling a vacuum that I can see.
