Sad to hear, he was a great musician.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

That's a big loss. Hilarious conversation here. I say to the guys at work, Levon Helm died. One guy says 'who's that?'. I say the drummer for The Band. He says 'what band?'. Lmfao.....

Yeah, very sad. I knew it had to be bad news when CBC's "World at Six" started playing The Band. It's been a bad week that way, I lost two friends this week.

On a similar note to your hilarious conversation, I run a Thursday afternoon duplicate bridge game, and at one point today I heard one lady say "Tell them who you saw yesterday", and her 80-ish partner says she was at a restaurant to celebrate a 20-year-old family member's birthday, and saw Gordon Pinsent (who fortunately is still alive), and none of the rest of the family had a clue who he was.

Definitely sad news... awesome musician. I saw him play in his band at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival last September... he sang a few songs, but unfortunately the damage from his throat cancer had robbed him of most of his singing voice (at least compared to when he was in The Band), but he still rocked it on the drums.

A musical friend who recorded some vocals/guitar with Hawkins and Helm once said he took some extra takes that day, just so he could hear & enjoy Helm's playing some more and hear that voice count them in one more time. I would have done the same, I think.

Another case of being reminded of how awesome someone was after they're gone (although we got the privilege of a few days' warning this time).

The SNL version is pretty good too.

Here's a crappy quality link, best I could find on short notice. I have a DVD version that rocks.
