Be careful who you drink with!

Post by Jayme » Sun May 27, 2012 5:40 pm

I had a pretty fucked up night last night and feel the need to share. So last night I went out with a friend from work with my roommate Gavin as his birthday is today. The evening started out normal enough, a few homebrews, then down to the Hart & Thistle until it closed and the Rock Bottom after that. It was at the Rock Bottom this friend from work started to get weird. I've drank with him before but he has never gotten nearly so drunk. I knew we were in trouble when he inverted a garbage can on his lap, and when the waitress asked what he was doing, he replied "I have a horse cock". He then proceeded to walk out with his glass of beer (unbeknown to us) and pull it out right on Spring Garden, running up to cars holding out the glass and shouting I LOVE THIS BEER. So we knew we had to just keep him calm and get him home. Along the way, he tried to grope several girls, played chicken with the traffic, and so forth. It was like dealing with a child (he's 38). Finally we get him back to our place where things calm down for a while until he says "let's do acid!". I have no interest in hallucinogens, nor did the other 2 guys present so we politely turned him down. So I'm not sure, but I suspect he may have then taken some when he was in the washroom. A short while later, he stands up and announced he's driving home. We laugh until we realize he's serious. So I take away his motorbike helmet, put the keys inside the helmet and locked them in a closet. He kind of laughed it off and chilled for another half hour. Then he stands up again, announces he's leaving, he's not a child and I can't stop him "you can either give me my fucking keys right now or there will be a scene". So I gave him the fucking helmet and keys just to avoid violence and he's on his way. Gavin and I had about enough time to say fuck he's never coming here again, and he bursts back through the door and grabs me by the neck. He starts shouting give me my fucking keys, I want my goddamn keys right now. I reply they are in the helmet, and pull them out for him. Apparently they're just his house keys - the actual bike keys fell out in the closet. An honest mistake. So he then goes into a bigger rage, clears the table of glasses with his helmet and smashes me in the chin. I start bleeding everywhere and grab him by the shoulders trying to talk some fucking sense into him. Meanwhile, Gavin finds the keys and he leaves. Then I watch the parking lot where his motorbike is and he's no where to be seen. I guess I should have called the cops right then and there, but we felt the need to just calm down first, and kept an eye on the bike. Finally 2 hours later he emerges from some bushes and walks the bike across the parking lot and heads back to White's Lake (30min away). Then I called the cops and asked them to look for him. Not sure how it turned out.

So, the lesson here is be careful who you drink ultra strong beer with! Otherwise, it could result in injury and what will undoubtedly be the most awkward day at work ever tomorrow.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

I don't think I'll be calling him a friend anymore, but yes hopefully he is alive in the drunk tank somewhere. Pretty successful beerday prior to that though! Nash, you weren't kidding about the amount of shitty beer being drank late at night at the RB. I think everyone but our table was drinking keiths. That shit blows my mind! My crazy former friend sure did like your IPA though haha.

typical douche.

your best bet is to avoid him and any future contact tell him you will be pressing charges if he comes near you again.

Yeah it's going to be hard since we work together, but I may just have to arrange with my supervisor so minimize our interactions some how. Quote of the night apparently was me shouting down the hall after he left "I'm bleeding all over the place! This is not appropriate behavior!"

You may be the most stabel thing in his life. Please tread slowly and see how it goes.

A less carring person would let him run wild.

Well I don't think I'm a big enough part of his life to be holding him together. I've known him about 3 years but in that time only have hung out maybe 4 or 5 times outside of work. I just want to feel safe at work and hopefully get him some help. I'm pretty close with my supervisor so I'm just hoping he will have some insight into how things like this have been handled in the past. I know there was an incident with a different employee at the Christmas party this year so it would help to find out how that was handled.

You just never know how some people will act when they drink too much booze. Business and pleasure in this case do not mix.

he was a douche for sure.....i know its easy to sit back and for us to make suggestions after the fact, but the worst thing to do IMO is hand over the keys. Do whatever you can to keep him there, or call the cops, throw him in a cab, grab his phone and call one of his friends(if he has any left), throw his keys out the window, etc. Its not so much him hurting himself as it was his choice to drive, its who he could hurt on the way...could be one of your family members out and about??

It's true but I think you needed to be there. Who knows what would have happened had he not gotten the keys. I know he carries a knife. And I call the police as soon as i saw him go to the bike. It's like on the air plane - put on your own oxygen mask first and then help others. If I was stabbed, dying on the floor he still would have driven and I couldn't have called the cops. Unfortunately the didn't get him - probably because of the shooting that was just down the street. That's out of my control - I told them where he lived and they should have had a car waiting for him in his driveway at the very least. So I guess what I'm getting at is it's easy to say I should not have given him the keys but given the extreme reaction just by accidentally not giving him the whole set, throwing them out the window would have been way worse. IMO I did the most logical thing - getting him the fuck out for my own safety and calling the police for the safety of the public. Hell, even if I did keep the keys, he used to hot wire cars for a living at a junk yard - probably would have just stolen a car and gone on a rampage.

I agree he needs some professional help. Drinking can bring out the worst in a person, but that kind of rage doesn't just come out of no where. Definitely some deep seeded issues. He has at least apologized for his actions today in a text message. Once I've had another day or two to calm down, I think I'll go talk to him and see what I can do. It's a delicate situation - one I wish I didn't have to be part of. I'm a lover not a fighter!

Yeah, and even though the most likely person he's going to hurt on a motorcycle is himself, somebody has to deal with the aftermath if he does.

On top of that, people get sued these days for letting people, who they knew were impaired, drive and cause accidents.

Yes that is true - however when I called the police they said to leave my door locked and do not peruse. My liability was removed once assault occurred and the police were called.

Thanks Chris - things could have ended much worse then they did.

"I know he carries a knife".
"he used to hot wire cars for a living - probably would have just stolen a car and gone on a rampage."
"He has at least apologized for his actions today in a text message. "

I wouldn't consider a text message to be a genuine apology. Not to sound blunt, but the more I read the more this guy has sketchiness written all over him. From my personal experience your best bet is to stay away from this guy.

I agree - I need to get along with him on a professional basis but that's it. And even at work, I'm going to avoid him when possible. I guess what I meant by at least he sent a text message apologizing is the fact that he has at least realized he fucked up - I was concerned he'd be waiting for me in the parking lot this morning or something, but it at least helped to put my mind at ease a little bit.

At first that sounded as what one of my coworkers calls a "one in ten", meaning that everyone has one of those bad drinking experiences about one in ten times...

Not that it excuses anyone's actions, but can anyone here honestly say that they've never had night they'd like to do-over?

I think you did exactly what you needed to do in that situation... I think going forward you should try not to judge him by that one night

Many nights I'd like to do over (though really - not much in the last 20 years) - but I've never assaulted someone to get my keys back... That's way more than a "one in ten".

Yeah, I figured the assault pretty much removes the liability - but that wouldn't necessarily stop someone suing :-(

I think I get what you mean, and yes I will try not to judge him as a whole based on that one night when I have to interact with him at work, but unfortunately he lost my trust. I just simply don't think it would be worth the risk drinking with him again.

I agree most people have nights they wish they could do-over, but IMO this situation was above and being a simple bad experience. If this sort of thing happened every one in ten times I've gotten drunk, I should have a LOT more scars and I think I would probably have given up drinking by now.
