Anyone a snowshoer? I am in the market but know very little (I'm a skier). I was recommended the the MSR Lightning Ascent 30's, but the seem a little top-of-the-line for a nubie. Anyone want to school me?

I have only used Military issue shoes.
They are great in snow over 1'. You may be able to get them at a surplus shop.

I've got a pair of Faber woodies. White ash I believe. Narrow width and I love them. Last time I used the aluminum kind it was a bad experience, but they were el cheapo Canadian Tire snowshoes and it was long time ago.

I have Faber Mountain Pro, they are excellent. Just make sure you pick the right length for your weight

Thanks guys!
I found a pair to borrow for the weekend. Hopefully I will figure out what type I will want and take the time to buy the ones best for me.

Our house has two pairs of atlas ones mine are ten series that are ten years old and hers are woman's 9 series. We love them both mine have had a lot of hard use in any and all conditions both for work and pleasure and all that has been replaced is the rubber heel strap. You can rent snow shoes in new glasgow antigonish truro and halifax giving you a broad range of choices to try.
If you plan on using them for self propelled alpine skiing a binding with more webbing than plastic will fit better with the alpine boot.
We try and get out 3 or 4 times a week if there is snow, bike and hiking trails are a great place to start, but the beauty of a snow shoe is the trail is where ever you make it. I have found skiing them and jumping is very entertaining so the steeper the ravine or hill the better plus you work up a good sweat while doing it.
Hope this helps
