Now Kyle can get his favorite pizza delivered right to his door! :mmm:
NEW GLASGOW – The spicy pepperoni and brown sauce particular to a Pictou County pizza is something many miss when they move away from home, but lately, local pizzeria Acropole has been sending some long-distance deliverers to doors all across Canada.

Former Pictou County residents can order their favourite pizza from anywhere in Canada. Whatever kind of pizza they’re craving, whether it’s pepperoni and cheese, combo or even a donair, Acropole will cook it, UPS will ship it frozen and it will be there within a day or two.

Milton Gallant, owner of the UPS Store in Westside Shopping Centre, pitched the idea for a marketing campaign with Acropole to one of its employees who was dropping off a pizza at the store.

“We ship odd items across Canada anyway like Fritos, Sobeys peanut butter, all-dressed chips to the U.S., so I just said to the pizza delivery guy, ‘we should put a sign up in the store because we do these things.’ He said, ‘Sure, I’ll ask the boss.’”

On Thursday, Gallant received approval from Drea Cougias, whose family owns the Acropole business, and he placed signs in the local pizza shops that say, “Who ships Acropole pizza in Canada? The UPS Store.”

Photos of the signs quickly spread to Pictou County expats through social media and the day after the signs went up, Gallant said there were about 15 messages on the UPS answering machine from people all across Canada wanting Pictou County pizza sent their way.

“I’m surprised at the impact of Facebook. For something that just happened on Thursday and Friday morning to come in to see that many calls from Edmonton, Calgary, Ontario, it blows you away,” he said.

Gallant said the furthest they’ve shipped Pictou County pizza so far has been to British Columbia. They’ve also had a number shipped to Alberta.

The cost to send six pizzas in one box to Fort McMurray is about $80 Gallant said, adding that Fort McMurray is a bit more expensive because it’s in an extended delivery area. He also said UPS can deliver to most places in Canada with next day delivery, while places in extended areas such as Fort McMurray usually take two days.

Gallant said their Pictou County pizza deliveries aren’t limited to Acropole and that Acropole is just the first shop to have signs advertising it. He said since the signs have gone up in Acropole, they’ve received calls for other pizza shops as well.

Gallant said people call UPS first to get a quote on the shipping cost, then they call their favourite Pictou County pizza shop and place the order, have someone local pick up the pizza, freeze it and bring it to the UPS Store which then ships it frozen. Gallant said most shipments are six pizzas in a 15 by 15 inch box.

“We had one woman in Medicine Hat and she had $250 worth in shipping of pizza products. She thought it was just great and couldn’t believe she could have it,” he said. “She was going to have a bunch of people from New Glasgow get together out there, people from Pictou County and have a pizza party.”

Cougias said some long-distance Acropole customers have been getting UPS to ship their pizzas for a while now.

“It started with a local police officer who had it sent to his daughter in Ontario. He had it shipped through UPS and he was telling a couple people and it just went from there,” he said.

Cougias said people are willing to pay to have Pictou County pizza shipped to their doorstep “because you can’t get this anywhere else.”

Sacha Smith of New Glasgow, currently living in Fredericton, N.B., said she found out Friday and is planning on looking at shipping costs.

“There are no words to describe how awesome that news was,” she said.

Cpl. Jeff Rector, a soldier in the Canadian Armed Forces based in Edmonton, found out about the service on his phone while on a field exercise in Wainwright, Alta.

"I just might do that myself," he said. "It's only $80 for some of the best pizza ever."

This week: visits to two places I have been intending to get to for some time, both the subject of frequent lobbying.

Our department includes two women who grew up in Pictou County, both of whom subscribe to the notion that the county has its own style of pizza, different from and better than the pizza anywhere else in the province. With Salvatore’s, Morris East, Tomavinos and Piatto all within a few minutes of our house, I thought it unlikely that a pie from Stellarton would impress me.

I was wrong.

It was a quiet part of the afternoon when I arrived at Andre’s and I was glad for that, because the room is so interesting I wanted to have a thorough look around. It is almost like a rock ’n’ roll museum in here, with a large wall decorated with autographed album covers, including the Police’s Outlandos d’Amour. There is a jukebox that once belonged to Elvis Presley, and each table is covered by concert tickets under glass. Looking at tickets from Jackson Browne, Bob Seger and Eric Clapton shows made me feel 18.

There is actually quite a big menu here of non-pizza items, and the excellent waitress, Amanda, told me the pastas are all made from scratch. The wine list includes seven offerings from Jost and Gaspereau. But I was here for one thing, and I asked Amanda about this mystical Pictou County pie.

“It’s our brown sauce,” she said. “It’s a cooked sauce with stuff like celery, not just tomatoes.”

I ordered the meat lovers, topped with pepperoni, salami, ground beef and bacon. While I waited, The River by Bruce Springsteen came on and the only other two customers in the place started analyzing the lyrics, making me feel like a kid again.

When my pizza arrived, it wasn’t noticeably brown, but it was noticeably delicious. The crust has just the right amount of chew and it is generously topped. The bacon is the last ingredient added, placed uncooked on top of the cheese before going in the oven, so the bacon fat renders during baking, adding oiliness but also adding flavour. I liked this pizza more with each bite, a comment echoed at home, where the leftovers were eaten.

I also took home a slice of phenomenal carrot cake with a great cream cheese icing, one of several desserts made in-house, including pecan pie. Kath was glad for the cake, and even happier she wasn’t in the car while I loudly sang The River.

A large pizza, pop, cake, tax and tip was $34. Good advice, ladies.

It is Kath’s assistant coach that has been telling us enthusiastically (she is a very enthusiastic person) to go to Burrito Jax.

During my bachelor days, when I was first learning to cook, I used to make burritos, but they always caused weird dreams, although that may have been the tequila. Burrito Jax, which seats just 10 people, actually expanded two months ago.

“We used to be a hole in the wall,” one of the two friendly young guys behind the counter told me. “Now we’re a cave in the wall.”

You order at the counter, and there are three menu items: burritos, burritos in a bowl instead of on a tortilla, and quesadillas. So the variety isn’t much, but the quality is.

There are five meats to choose from, a list that doesn’t include ground beef.

“We slow-roast our beef for 14 hours, then shred it,” one of the counter guys told me. “It’s a lot better than ground beef.”

After choosing your meat, you go down the line, choosing from an array of vegetables, including mashed sweet potato, which I recommend, four salsas of varying heat and then sauces. I think there were three or four sauces, but after the guy said mole, I didn’t hear anything else. To this point, the process takes about two minutes and then your folded up burrito goes into a sandwich press for a few minutes to crisp up the tortilla.

Among us, we had a pulled beef burrito, a chicken burrito and a pulled pork quesadilla. All were good enough that I wasn’t surprised to hear this little place had served 125 people that day at lunch.

Supper for three was $28. Good advice, Kelly.

Pictou County Pizza chip in top ten across Canada
A New Glasgow man's entry in the Lay's 'Do us a Flavour' contest is making ripples across the country.

Scott Kraus, a student at St. FX, has received over 500 votes for his Pictou County Pizza flavour in the contest, making it among the top ten in the nation. Currently, the top voted chip flavour, Powerful Poutine sits at 1130 votes.

"Were in a great spot for the judging," said Kraus.

While the voting doesn't determine which four flavours will move on to the final round, it does allow the judges to see which flavours have the potential for popular appeal.

On Apr. 25, a panel of judges will judge each entry on its originality and creativeness, simplicity and fun and flavour.

The four finalists will have their flavour developed and be on shelves for purchase this summer.

Pizza party pays off in Pictou County
Unique fundraiser brings together pie lovers to sample area’s best slices

http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia ... tou-county" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
NEW GLASGOW — Eating pizza at Glasgow Square on Saturday night meant tucking in your elbows and leaning your face into the scrumptious triangles.

It was also a good idea to get someone to hold your beer while you bit, because the first-ever Pictou County Pizza Competition was definitely no dainty dining experience.

Almost 300 people paid $25 each to stand shoulder to shoulder in the New Glasgow theatre while they sampled eight slices of pizza from eight different kitchens, and washed them down with locally made brew.

Ticket holders voted for their favourites to win the People’s Choice Award, while a panel of five independent judges conducted a blind taste test to select the best pizza in Pictou County.

They judged the samples based on crust, sauce, ingredients and overall impression, said Doug Logan, a member of the Rotary Club of New Glasgow, which organized the event as a

fundraiser.

At the end of the evening, Cafe Italia’s pie won the People’s Choice Award, while the judges awarded the trophy to Acropole Pizza.

Each person’s ticket was punched with each slice received until every participating pizza establishment had been sampled, said Logan.

Every ticket holder also received two complimentary beers from Uncle Leo’s Brewery.

The brainchild of Glasgow Square manager Carlton Munroe, the competition featured music, door prizes, pizza trivia, raffles and a cash bar.

Local businesses helped sponsor the event, which involved prominent citizens as pizza judges and a list of the regions best-known pizza builders.

The competition opened at 7p.m., and by 7:30 there was still a lineup at the door.

“Nothing we have done has sparked the buzz and enthusiasm that this has,” said Logan, a Rotary Club member since 1997.

Pictou County residents obviously like their pizza, he said.

In fact, Pictou County pizza is so popular that local residents who leave home to work or go to school have it frozen and shipped to them in the far corners of Canada — and from Scotland to Afghanistan.

The event was an idea whose time had come, Munroe said.

All proceeds go to the 90-year-old Rotary Club’s many projects, including Sea Cadets, Coady International Institute, literacy programs, scholarships and other educational initiatives in Canada and abroad, homeless shelters, student exchanges and clean-water projects.

Acropole New Glasgow named best pizza in Pictou County

We’ve all wondered it, and it has been highly contested for years – who has the best pizza in Pictou County?

Well, the official winner of the prestigious title and bragging rights for the next year is Acropole in New Glasgow.

“We were surprised,” said Rhonda Cougias, of Acropole.

After a night of feasting and beer the full house cheered the pizza place on as some employees graciously accepted the award. The best pizza award was decided by a panel of judges who indulged on the pizza as the crowd watched.

“It was a really good fundraiser,” said Cougias, still a little flustered by the big win.

The Pictou County Rotary Club International held the Pictou County best of pizza awards.

The Peoples choice award of the night went to Café Italia.

“We were happy to win the peoples choice, that’s the one we wanted,” said Jeff Gillin, the owner of Café Italia. “For the public to vote us, that was the main vote.”

Café Italia plans to be back next year as well, to defend their people’s choice title.

The whole idea for the fundraiser, which brought in around 250 people, was credited to Carlton Munroe. The Rotary Club of New Glasgow is planning to hold the event next year, making it bigger and better.

“We need to look at some of the logistics,” said Doug Logan, a member of the committee who helped organize the event.

For the most part he credits some of the logistic changes that will have to be made as small things, like beer lineups. Other new changes next year may be things such as having more vendors, including a female judge and adding new categories.

“The problem we’re going to have, is to sift through all the amazing ideas that we now have,” said Logan.
