Love how Anthony Bourdain is taking them to task for it. Would love to see he and Batali debate this one over dinner.

Bourdain's commentary has been excellent. Do half of the chefs/restaurants/stores participating even really understand what they're boycotting?

Such a healthy population of seals out there, why is this not considered a mainstream food source?

Whoops, my mistake.

One of these guys was on Mainstreet yesterday blathering on about this and that and how he wasn't going to buy 60lbs of mussels from PEI anymore, because that has a lot to do with seals. And one thing they sure don't like is pointing out their gross hypocrisy in general. Fucking morons.

Whale is awesome if prepared properly. Marinated overnight in a nice marinate, put on a very hot bbq for 1 minute each side :grilling:

Not a big fan of seal, was forced to eat seal's flippers cured in lactic acid too many times as a kid, but it is ok fresh.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

what a fucking bunch of assholes. My blood is boiling so much I have to take a blood pressure pill to get me below bursting.
Ass wipes like these shit disturbers fawn on the cute seal... I would like to see one get close enough to have the seal bite off their face.

All the bad press the assholes spew out are mostly of a bygone era. They shovel out this shit to gain support and dollars to keep them going living lives
in wealth... the fuckers.

Nothing wrong with a nice tender piece of seal meat. When it is done right it is one juicy tasty hunk of animal flesh.

So to the fuckers who spew out shit like that article... :moon: :finger: :finger: :finger:

Some chefs are taking exception to the Chefs for Seals campaign, that is asking for a boycott of Canadian seafood in protest of the seal hunt.

The Humane Society of the United States says it has signed up about 40 American chefs. The boycott demands the seal hunt be stopped.

But earlier this week, well-known American TV chef and author Anthony Bourdain, said boycotting Canadian seafood in order to protect seals was a ridiculous idea. P.E.I. chef and author Michael Smith is adding his voice against the campaign.

"I'm part of a growing chorus of chefs and food voices here in Canada that are taking great exception with the boycott," said Smith.

"This is not a fair boycott. It is not fair to link our fishermen and their fisheries to the seals. It's just not the same."

Smith said when influential people in the United States step up and make what he calls "wildly misinformed claims" he's not going to sit back and be silent. Hard working fishermen in Atlantic Canada could be hurt by this, he said.

Smith has taken to Twitter to say the boycott is unfair, and is targeting some of the American chefs taking part.

At least one chef appears to be listening. Two star Michelin chef Daniel Patterson of Coi in San Francisco tweeted on Wednesday asking the HSUS to take him off the boycott list. Patterson said the issue is complicated, and he did not know enough to form an opinion.

Let them boycott Canadian seafood and continue to eat the radioactive Pacific seafood. Leave the good stuff for us.

Damn, had seal last Tuesday and forgot to take a picture of it.
None-the-less it was so tasty, I think I'll fill a freezer full of it first chance I get ( just joking though, although I do like it, I don't like it enough to eat much of it )

It can be, but if you clean it well and remove as much of the fat as you can, it makes a great meal. I like the flipper best and when done right resembles the taste I get from my favorite meal of Turr ( Common Murre ). I have a salt water duck in my oven right now which also resembles the taste of Turr/Seal... yummy.
Most sea birds will share a common taste with seal due to their diet of fish. ( but those pesky scientists say seals don't eat fish )
My Grandmother used to parboil it before baking to rid the meat of excess fat and sometimes even resorted to covering the fat with baking soda to leach out some fat before baking it in the oven.
