Internet Providers
Moving to a new house and looking around at different options.
What's everyone using for providers? Is fiberOP worth it if I mainly just stream Netflix and do basic things? Trying to find something that balances price and performance.

Re: Internet Providers
I've been with Eastlink for 5+ years and only ran into one or two issues. Both times they had a tech out to my house within 24 hours. I work from home so I upgraded to the 80mbps service. I've got phone and cable through them as well, so there's no internet usage cap. No complaints at all.

Re: Internet Providers
That's my one concern with eastlink - if you have any level higher than the basic one, you get a bandwidth cap (unless you have phone/cable). For me that means I wouldn't get anything other than entry level eastlink, or fibre op - and the speed of eastlink never bothers me.jeffsmith wrote:I've got phone and cable through them as well, so there's no internet usage cap.

Re: Internet Providers
That's if you're just an Internet customer. With a bundle you don't have a usage cap at higher speeds.

Re: Internet Providers
It seems crazy that the internet on it's own is fairly close to the price of a bundle (tv/internet/phone) ... at least for 3 months. I just want the internet. I have been with Eastlink in the past and have enjoyed their service.

Re: Internet Providers
I had so many problems with eastlink bandwidth and issues with their nodes. But that was a few years ago now, so I am assuming they have upgraded their infistructure a bit by now.
I have Bell Fiberop now and have never had a single problem at all. It has been rock solid in stability and always get at least 90% of advertised speeds when testing.

Re: Internet Providers
I think it all depends on your area and what the infrastructure is like. Both of my neighbours on either side of me have had nothing but problems with FibreOp.

Exactly - I've always been an internet-only customer (since I started having my own, maybe 2007) and the bandwidth cap is a newish restriction. It bothers mejeffsmith wrote:That's if you're just an Internet customer. With a bundle you don't have a usage cap at higher speeds.

Re: Internet Providers
I don't like it either and made me hold off upgrading my speed (mostly for video chat reasons for work) for a long time until it was clear the cap wouldn't affect me. That said, now I feel I'm being held hostage a bit because I can't go to an Internet only accountCorneliusAlphonse wrote:Exactly - I've always been an internet-only customer (since I started having my own, maybe 2007) and the bandwidth cap is a newish restriction. For internet only Navnet Communications is the way to fly. They buy bulk from Weaklink and resell it, internet only. Same speed. No bundles. No caps. $42.70/month. Savings of ~ $360/yr from basic Weaklink internet.

Re: Internet Providers
That's right. We've been thinking about making the switch because we can't get FibreOP out here. As you said, no caps, but I believe they only offer 20mbps - but that's a hell of a lot better than the 4mbps we are getting now.NASH wrote:For internet only Navnet Communications is the way to fly. Re: Internet Providers
Yup I was referring to Weaklink basic internet service - 20 mbps down, 2 mbps up. Same speed. No caps. Also, I see Weaklink has gone up again, basic interent is $74.95/mth so the yearly saving is more like $440. That's insane. That's right.

This is exactly the thing I was hoping to uncover! Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm all about the bottom line and that has my interest peaked. I assume if they buy bulk from eastlink they can service the same areas. Thanks againNASH wrote:For internet only Navnet Communications is the way to fly. Re: Internet Providers
Yes and no. I think they service HRM only. They're a small local company, I asked if I could go pick up the modem but they insisted on coming to my home to set it up aka "plug it in". Seemed odd but yeah...Halifax_Jeff wrote:I assume if they buy bulk from eastlink they can service the same areas. Thanks again

Just called the business number they did the switch. A few awkward pauses on the phone but the guy was happy to get a new account.Halifax_Jeff wrote:So you just asked for the business pricing?pvanberk wrote:Eastlink business Phone and Internet for $67 (I don't have a business but they didn't mind).

Re: Internet Providers
business internet only is $57/mth, it's decent but not as decent as $42.70/mth
It's odd actually, they always used to charge more to business. Glad to see it.

I'll be calling Navnet tomorrow to see if they can service my new place. I read one review on yellowpages http://www.yellowpages.ca/bus/Nova-Scot ... 39124.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but if you're having good luck with it I think it's worth checking out.

Here's a thread with some decent information, it covers a couple of other options as well:Halifax_Jeff wrote:I'll be calling Navnet tomorrow to see if they can service my new place. Re: Internet Providers
That review is clearly from someone that leased a wifi router from them and doesn't know how to reboot it. Regardless, the tiny little company isn't going to have much in the way of after hr service, not that Weaklink does. Also, I don't believe that they'd ask you to call Eastlink if you had a problemHalifax_Jeff wrote:I'll be calling Navnet tomorrow to see if they can service my new place.
