Re: Charcoal
yup. you are all good unless you make your own. which seems stupid.Commercially manufactured food smokers would be permitted, providing the manufacture instructions are followed. The addition of food smokers is a new recommendation because of a gradual
increase of complaints related to neighbours using homemade food smokers, which are determined to be modified chimeneas or other devices burning wood.

Re: Charcoal
Did you purchase your BBQ at a store? Then I believe the answer is yes.
Did you build your BBQ from an old oil drum? Then I believe the answer is no.
I'm sure much discussion can (and will) be had on whether that makes any sense whatsoever.
I had a neighbour up until last year who would have largely unattended open fires within city limits, during "no burn" season, under a canopy of trees, with the fuel including household garbage, and all within a kilometer of a fire station. And several reports to authorities of this behavior (as if the acrid smoke wasn't enough to tip anyone off) resulted in exactly ZERO action by the city or the fire department or the police. I have trouble believing that this would be any better enforced than the existing laws, although I can understand why those who do follow the existing laws would be pissed that responsible behavior previously enjoyed is now "illegal".

this is the list of halifax councilors. Emails should be sent to all of them because the proposed amendment was developed without consultation with the public and it says that it is being done to stop people calling the fire department when their neighbor is having a legal fire. That is a very poor reason to prohibit something. The report even says that the fires are low risk.

I have had HRMFD in my yard many times for my BBQ and not that bid a smoke. They laugh and ask what time supper is.
I wish my neighbour would talk to me but I don't know which it is.

I'll probably be running a WSM at my new place soon and I'm curious how many complaints I'll get.

Re: Charcoal
Because I'm on septic the proposal says I'll have to be 50 feet away from basically anything. So the road seems like a great place to set up our homemade whole pig pit

Re: Charcoal
Heard on the radio this afternoon, motion denied in today's council meeting, or something to that effect. Should be the end of it.

Re: Charcoal
one potential issue I heard is that they did amend existing laws to allow your neighbour to shut you down if they get a doctor's note, and getting a doctor's note is as easy as going into a walk in clinic and asking for one whether you have a real issue with the smoke or not.
The motion as written would've been beyond terrible though, it included the fire department being required to put out any fire that a neighbour called in as a "nuisance"
I'm hoping using a commercially built charcoal based smoker makes none of these arguments (which seem to mostly focus on fire pits and homemade wood fueled smokers) apply to me at all.
