Completely Homemade Wine

Post by CiderBeerWine » Sun Oct 19, 2014 5:11 pm

I planted a row of grapes at home, Chardonnay, Seval Blanc, and Pinot Noir. Also two types of table grapes.

I ended up with three freezer bags of grapes, and I got 2 L of juice. It is just starting to ferment now, I will post some pictures shortly.

For the hell of it, I also made an extract batch by boiling the leftover grape skins in water and straining it, I kept this separate from real juice batch though. Should be awesome.

The one on the right is the real wine, and the left one is the leftovers extracted with boiling water.

Looks good! Seyval's a really nice grape. Hard to find it for homewinemakers.

Just pressed 14 gallon Cayuga (19 brix) and 3 gallons Frontenac Gris (21 brix) this am. I'm cofermenting them. Pitching QA23 yeast tonight. Gonna chapitalize to 22 brix.

The Seyval's I bought at Halifax seed. The Pinot was from Wal-Mart and the Chardonnay was from Sobeys!

I've been growing Frontenac gris, St. Peppin and KW-96-2 ("Evangeline"). Both the St. Peppin and KW-96-2 have Seyval parentage. I had some chardonnay vines that died a couple of years ago from mildew.

Cool, have you made wine from them? I saw a "Prarie Star" plant at wal mart too, and that apparently makes decent wine and is cold hardy. I will probably get them next spring. Halifax seed had Baco Noir last time I checked.

what size plant would you need to grow enough grapes for a 5/6 gallon batch?
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Baco doesn't ripen very well in HRH. Best I've seen in 21 brix, and that was in a hot year in the annapolis valley. Unripe red = vegetal flavours...not the best IMHO. Prarie Star sounds intersting.

Your supposed to get 0.5-1 gallon per mature plant. I get 3 gallons from 8 plants if I'm lucky. I've got about 30 in total, but many are just starting to produce. I buy most of my NS grapes from a grower in Kingston, NS. Reasonable prices and great grapes.

So would anyone be interested in doing a plant cutting exchange in the spring. We can trade grape cuttings, and I dunno maybe some hop rhizomes or anything else that would be a good addition to our "brewing gardens"?
