Google Ads

Post by Jimmy » Wed Oct 23, 2013 3:16 pm

Just an FYI for those wondering about the ads showing up on the site. I received an email today from our host saying that we've exceeded the monthly allowable "program and script executions" (and have been for months now - they just haven't said anything). Also, the hosting service no longer includes unlimited space/transfers (well it includes unlimited transfer, but not unlimited executions). We're at about 20,000 unique visitors a month, and have 10G of files stored on the server. I had to upgrade the hosting account to the next service to avoid interruptions to the site...

All that being said - I'm just trying to recoup some of the hosting fees with some click thru ad traffic.

Is it expensive? I'd like to chip in. No reason why you should be paying for it all.

at least the ads are useful and entertaining http://www.picobrew.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; :rockin:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

It's not overly expensive. In September I paid $120 for the yearly hosting service and was paying $30/yr for backup service. Today I upgraded the hosting service to the next level up and it was an additional $50. At the current size, it's not something to be concerned with yet, but providing the ability to store all our pictures on this server will likely become an issue again in a couple years (we've used 10G so far, the new service gives us 20G of storage). I'd like to keep the site free for everyone along with the ability to host images/files on the site instead of an external hosting service.

Another option I had thought about was offering some type of "Supporting Member" option on the forum, but as I said above, I'd like to eliminate any costs to the users.

We have some money from the last group buy we did. You aren't taking no for an answer this time.

Yeah, that's too big of a bill for you to be taking on every year for yourself.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the pay-for-different-ranks model, but I'll gladly chip in some money

Yeah - I wouldn't want ranks. But I get at least $5 in value from this every year. The grain buy tithe is a good starting point.

I transferred $175 to Jimmy which was the balance of the GB funds I had. Today, DaveG sent me the GB money he had collected for us ($233), and I am thinking this money should be used to fund the forum fees in the future. Comments?

that's about as close as it comes to club fees, which should definitely be used to pay for hosting. other uses come secondary, in my opinion.

Hosting should definitely be covered 100%. If Google Ads make money, I think we should keep them. Personally I just ignore them but if they help, that's good. If we have money left over, that's a good problem to have. :)

The forum is part of what makes this club so successful (part).
