Gender Balance

Post by GuingesRock » Tue Jul 29, 2014 3:13 pm

We balance our malt and our hops to make a good beer. More gender balance is needed on this site I think.

Is there any chance we could have a female mod (or two) on here for example? I think Becky or Keely would make good mods.

The best run comp I have been in was I think run by a woman (Because Beer).

I wonder if we should stop addressing the site with “Gents” … “Thanks Gents” etc. There are women on here, and I value their contribution to the site. I’d not like to be addressed as a lady. There was a birthday thread for someone on here and redoubt wished him a happy birthday with a spilly. The response was “thanks gents!”

....that's not good :(

My 2 cents.

I believe the above two comments are potentially relevant to any discussion regarding why there may not be a significant female representation here on the forum.

Interesting. Please help me out.

Lola was a transvestite in some song that some man was obsessed with, and confused about his obsession. I thought the raspberry blonde had mixed gender.

Do you think saying a particular beer is a “chick beer” is any different to saying a particular beer is a “guy beer”. I read in the Tasting Beer book by Ray Daniels and on page 216 it says: “chick beers are what beer geeks call these” referring to fruit beers. I didn’t think it was at all derogatory to women, so in a way I was quoting what I read without thinking about it.

If you think that’s derogatory to women, let me know. My wife is quite a feminist, so let me know. She had no objection.

As for the Poolside Blonde name, it was very popular with women that I know. Kathleen has been giving it out to her Yoga women friends and they have been posting pictures of glasses of “poolside Blonde” on Facebook with glee. It’s cute, I think, and not a threat, it has a double meaning, women like women, just as men like men, and of course as Jimmy posted a pic, there are poolside blonde males also. Are you reading negative connotations into the word Blonde? There were no negative connotations in my mind. I was also trying to think of a name for my raspberry blonde incorporating redhead because it had a pink head from the raspberries, but it didn’t work.

Men like women and men like beer. Is that slighting men?

The idea isn't to make out that men and women are the same, but instead to celebrate their differences where differences exist. My argument is that they compliment each other, they always have.

Having said all that Aaron, I will take your advice, since it may help the issue. It is enough for me that you have raised an objection. You are probably writing some intelligent post and I'll let you have the final word.

I really would like it if any women on here would mention some frustrations they may have on the site with gender balance issues. Because without that, it’s all conjecture. My idea was to put some women in charge along with the men, but that’s Jimmy’s call.

I'm quite familiar with the Kinks and that song.

I love the Poolside Blonde name and wish I'd thought of it.

I tried to keep some context around the quotes because I didn't want to cherry pick particular sentences. I quoted the first because of the phrase "fruit beers are more feminine compared to a DIPA." I'll go out on a limb and suggest a lot of women who like strong and/or hoppy beers would happily pour a fruit beer over Mr. Daniels' and the beer geeks' heads given half a chance. The phrase references (and perpetuates) a stereotype as much as "beer is for men" does. I know plenty of men and women who like fruit flavored things; I don't consider apple pie or peach pie more "feminine" than chocolate pie or pecan pie. Do you? Yet somehow a fruit beer is more feminine?

And the second quote was about the phrase "chick beers" and probably even simply the word "chick". Would you use the word "chick" or the phrase "chick beer" out loud in open company? What about at a Ladies' Beer League event? I suspect that if you did you'd quickly be facing an absence of people to converse with. You are a medical professional; do you use that word openly with your clients? Your female clients? The implication of "chick beer" is that it's something that's not for men (who are the "real" beer drinkers). It's stereotypical and divisive.

To be clear it isn't my intention to accuse you of being sexist. But I think you said two things, by your own admission without thinking too hard about them, that could easily be interpreted as sexist or could be off-putting to females who might otherwise be interested in joining and/or participating in this forum. All I was really trying to do was point out how easy it is to do so even by someone who himself started a thread about how it would be nice to have more female participation in this community. You may think I'm being overly PC about it but I can tell you at least one woman I know (who I actually don't consider to be "quite a feminist") isn't a big fan of the term "chick beer".

I can't say I'm a fan of appointing a mod based on gender. We already have 4 and I think that's plenty..there's no need to arbitrarily add mods.

Also, isn't appointing a female moderator status, based solely on their gender, accomplishing the exact opposite of what you're looking to accomplish? The whole idea is to not treat them special, but treat them the same as we would anyone else on here. I don't think any of the women come to the forum looking to be treated special because they are of a different gender from the majority of the users. It would be like giving someone else moderator status simply because they are of a visible minority.

Jimmy, I suggested it to help with gender balance though. The only way to balance is to add more of the other gender. Like balancing hops and malt.

It's not adding any additional female members, though, and I don't think that it will attract new women just because there's a woman moderator on the forum.

As a possible solution. We could possibly try to talk one of the existing mods into a tuck and tape job.

I think you're analogy is flawed: Men and women are not malt and hops.

I agree that I don't think it will necessarily attract new female members. And I got BIAB bags to make! So I would be an ineffective mod.
