Re: Brewha 3-in-1 kettle & jacketed conical (BIAC)
It's the actual body of the fan that's leaking. There's 2 pieces that make up fan housing and it's leaking at the seam of those 2 pieces, as well as out of the screw holes that hold the 2 pieces together.
I've thought about silicone to seal the holes/seam, but don't know if it's a good idea (might build up inside)? I also thought about drilling a hole in the rim of the bowl (it has a bit of a lip that will hold a bit of water) and running a drain hose down to a 5g bucket. Some of the reading I've done shows people with the fan mounted the other way (horizontal instead of vertical) and they remove one screw for drainage.

With a bigger bowl/hood, bigger then the pot, any drips, dirt etc. would drip outside the pot and wouldn't get in the boil, any condensation on the inside would also run to the edge of the bowl and drip outside the pot?
Big Eric's might have a big enough aluminum mixing bowl.

I use the fan horizontally with a drain hole drilled in it.

How well ventilated is the room you're brewing in? I ask because I used to keep the brewroom door closed during the boil and it wouldn't completely vent. In fact it got really humid in there despite having a huge fan like yours in it. I then started to leave the door open to the rest of the basement and it worked great.
So here's what was happening... the fan was actually trying to suck the humid air out of the brewroom faster than the new air could flow under the door (aka make-up air) almost creating a vacuum. But when the door was open, there was no more restriction of make-up air and the whole thing worked much better.
Now, I still get some condensation on my exhaust fan, but I'm guessing that's due to temperature variations between the kettle and the vent ducts. Maybe an HVAC person can help us with that

You're always going to get some condensation around a fan unless you put in a blower that's rated in horsepower instead of cfm lol

Where'd you get the glycol chiller? I've had my eye out for one.

HP bought it to use at Bad Apple but didn't end up using it.

I sourced it for Jeff @ Bad Apple through a friend. It is housed in a sweet SS cabinet with built in pump, ss recirc coils and digital tstat. It was previously installed but was never used and the price was bang on.

I tried out my ghetto exhaust setup today. It was great as far as removing the steam is concerned, but the condensation running down the bowl is a PITA. I think I will either build a hood out of wood, or have my friend bend me one out of sheet metal and have a condensation drip catch around the whole hood with a drain in one corner.

My foam board hood is working pretty good but I get a lot of water in my fan. I also have to wipe things down a few times during the boil.

Is the water in the fan causing any problems? Mine seems to keep the water in the fan (doesn't drip directly back in kettle), but it runs down the outside of the bowl and drips over the edge. I'm fine with that, but would like a channel to collect that water and direct it to a drip tube. Other than that I'd be pretty happy with it.

Re: Brewha 3-in-1 kettle & jacketed conical (BIAC)
My fan fills with water. If I let it go too long it shorts out inside the fan (not the electrical box on it) - I'm 99% sure this is what's tripping my GFCI sometimes.
Water also leaks out of the fan housing. I collect it with a little folded towel on the hood. Today I added some tin tape and it's a bit better. Having the fan so close to the boil and vertical is somewhat of a problem. My fan didn't fill so badly with water when it was horizontal and just leaked out the bottom holes.
Here's a video I just shot.

Re: Brewha 3-in-1 kettle & jacketed conical (BIAC)
Anyone know of a local source for a liquid bypass valve that would be ~2psi (or adjustable to ~2psi) and reasonably priced? I'm looking to install one before the jacket to recirculate the glycol back to the chiller should the solenoid valve be closed (it would also act as a safety buffer should the liquid return from the jacket get blocked, preventing the jacket from being over pressurized). I believe the pump on the chiller runs non-stop in order to mix the glycol bath and because of that, it's constantly trying to pump glycol through the jacket.

Re: Brewha 3-in-1 kettle & jacketed conical (BIAC)
Good luck finding one reasonably priced. Usually they're referred to as check valves with a set cracking pressure (5psi is most common).
I used a slightly opened return valve instead.

Yeah, the only one I've found so far is over $200 from mcmaster carrAllanMar wrote:Good luck finding one reasonably priced. Usually they're referred to as check valves with a set cracking pressure (5psi is most common).

Other option would be one of those Chinese motorized ball valves (~$40-50). Get a 3way, so when its not going to the conical it would divert back. Also less flow restriction then the solenoid.
I think there was a guy on here selling some actually.

This could potentially work - not sure if I'd be able to accurately get it to 2psi..

Edit. I suppose I'd just install a pressure gauge to adjust it..duh.

Just get a two port solenoid. I probably have one lying around. What size are the glycol lines?

I haven't picked up lines yet, but the ones coming out of the chiller look like 1/2” - I'm not sure how I'm coming off those and running to the conical. All there is coming off the chiller are 2 lines like the ones below, they are a hard plastic.mr x wrote:Just get a two port solenoid. I probably have one lying around. What size are the glycol lines?
