Advent #5 - Not Quite India Brown Ale

Advent #5 - Not Quite India Brown Ale

Brewing around here has been a rare thing lately, so to meet my commitment for this, I ended up with a very 'seat of the pants' brew day. I might be hard pressed to come up with a repeatable recipe.

5lb 4oz 2row
6oz extra special roast
6 oz C240
4 oz chocolate

mash with 9.5 qt water @ 154F

add 1 can Coopers Brown Ale malt extract and top up kettle to 7 gal

2 oz fuggles 60 min
1 oz simcoe 10 min
1 oz citra 10 min
At this point the battery died on my scale, so final hop additions were "Meh, that looks like an ounce, better add another handful just in case."
~1 oz simcoe 5 min
~1 oz citra 5 min
~0.5 oz simcoe 0 min
~0.5 oz citra 0 min

ferment with US-05

If it sucks - my apologies. I promise I'll put more effort into the next exchange.

Just cracked this one and I like it, I get a lot of currants and deep flavours really well carbed and clean overall. Smells awesome too!

Enjoy this beer. Great Friday after work brew. Nice toasty roasty malt flavors blended well with the hop flavor and aroma. Nice fuck up Andy :)

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I'm settling in and enjoying this. Lots of interesting flavours and aromas. I like the bitterness too. That bloody Woody has shifted my lupulin. It isn't over carbonated, I poured it too quickly ..just got home from a long day, dumped stuff on the counter and poured the beer.

Thanks.

Advent # 5 paired with Medium Cheddar and Black Pepper Crackers.

Great beer Andy, really flavorful and well balanced. Definitely a harder style to balance and you nailed it. Thanks for the suggestion on the Cheddar Jeff goes very well with it!

Erin was in the room. She's not very nice to him, always making him do things he doesn't want to.

Woo! Snuck into the advent with one of Andy's extra bottles. Nice and assertive. Wish my fuck ups tasted like this.

I thought I was going to find it too bitter from my first sip but that has settled into the overall flavour profile. Was thinking of bittered molasses for flavour from that first impression but the hops are now revealing themselves.

Letting it warm up from fridge temp is definitely bringing forth the taste better.

Good job! Nice way to settle in after work.

 I think you are all being pretty generous, but I'll take it. What I'm not liking about this beer is the harshness at the back of the tongue. It kinda reminds me of that nasty cough medicine taste - it could be the unknown IBU contribution from the can of hopped malt extract. Maybe its some weird interplay between the roast malt, alpha acids and hop aromas.

Maybe you should just shut up and take the compliments :D . Seriously, I'm liking this. The roast isn't over the top, and plays nice with the hops.

Really enjoyed it as well. Reminded me of PEIBC's Black IPA they had out this summer/fall.

Good job Andy, greatly enjoyed. Love the aroma and the roasted flavor. The back bitterness is definitely apparent but not offensive and easily adjusted. I'd consider brewing this with slight shift from bittering to a bit more late hopping as the malt aroma can definitely handle it.
Kegged: El Dorado IPA, Rocketfuel 2.0, Wet Hopped Pale, Ryrish Red, Marzen, BN Exchange Dunkel, BN Exchange NEIPA, Lies Lies Lies - Citra <0.5% ale
Fermenting: NZ Pilsner with Enigma, Strawberry brett cider

Roasty/toasty. ..malt balanced nicely with some wonderful hop choices. ..I like my browns slightly bitter like this. ..nice head that looks like an Ice cream float as it falls...good beer to drink while watching The Santa Clause

Great job

Quite enjoyed this last night. Roast and chocolate flavours up front. Good carbonation. Not very bitter. Just fine with me.

Got very little carbonation on mine, but I really enjoyed this beer. Was an extremely interesting balance of dark fruitiness with bright hoppiness. I would totally be down with killing a growler of this.
