Temptation Red Clone

Post by spickup » Sat Jan 24, 2015 7:19 pm

I am trying to make a clone of BR Temptation Red. I heard from a little birdie that there is only one hop used in the beer. Anybody care to venture a guess as to what it is? I think centennial or cascade would be a safe bet, but anybody care to make a more educated guess?

I'm not sure on the hop. But it is single. Grain build maybe harder to get than the hop schedule. What were you thinking for a grain build?

Well, you'll want to wait until the recipe is finalized...however, I can tell you it's 2 row, munich, melanoiden, and carahell. Columbus and Centennial hops.

No you can replicate it, based on that highly detailed recipe I just provided.

But that means I need to buy a 6 pack and pay attention to what I am drinking. Although an American amber is on my list. May have to brew one too.

Or just brew one that's better.

That's what I mean. Not like I don't have the hops for it. I'm pushing around 35lbs if not more.

I'm sure Jimmy's IPA is great, and that Keith has plenty of hops, but I'd love to get back to the original question: Can anybody give a suggestion as to what the hop might be?

I'm thinking your original guess is likely right. I haven't had that beer in a long time so don't really remember.

Yea it's been ages aswell. Should be easy to identify. It's most likly a c hop. Bring a bottle to the next meeting. I'm sure we could identify the hop.

Centennial is very trendy at the moment (I think Lunch and Detour have it, maybe HP's BoxCutter also?), Cascade less so these days. I find centennial tastes a bit like slightly mouldy lemons.

I think I tried the beer when I went on a brewery tour there, but don't remember it. They did seem very tight lipped.

On the other hand, if they say "come on Guys, you don't need our help to figure that out." They might be implying it is an easy one to figure out. That suggests cascade.

I think they mean our pallets are advanced enough to figure out a single hop. I may hit the nslc this week sometime.

My money would be on Cascade. It definitely doesn't have that distinctive Centennial flavour.

I would go with Cascades, lots of additions throughout
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I just bought a 6 pack, drinking a beer now. If I had to take a guess I'd say they use Chinook. Slight spicyness with a grapefruit and mild pine flavor. Malt on this beer is overpowering the nose, so can't get anything off that.

as the beer is warming up, seems like I'm getting a mild floral nose.

maybe it's a citrus nose with a sweet follow through from the malts.

I suck at this haha.
