If it is for the Nova Scotia Craft Beer week, then should it be called the “Nova Scotia Craft Beer Awards” But then the Brewnosers isn’t an NS group,
I was wondering about “East Coast Beer Awards” but then there’s a clash …NS Craft Beer Week/East Coast Beer Awards.

I like plain old “BrewNosers” competition. It conjures up an image of a group of judges assessing the aroma of beer samples. It’s a good name for a club as well as a competition.

“Brewnosers Open 2015 maybe. Wait, that’s no good (initials BO not a good mix with nosers).

I don’t like the expression Hommebrew challenge, I think “homebrew” should be phased out. “Homebrew” has bad connotations from the old kit and kilo days.

- Brewnosers Brew Challenge
- Brewnosers 2015
- Brewnosers Brew Tasting
- Here For The Beer

“Brewnosers” already gives a regional maritime, east coast theme, but could add to that …

- Drunken Sailor Challenge
- Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Beer
- Beer And A Fiddle :D

Brewnosers Beer & Fiddles?

(cf “Beer and Skittles”, an old English Pub Game and expression …”Life isn’t all Beer and Skittles”)

Something to keep in mind is that we're going to have to find a venue willing to host this. Some of the local breweries/brew pubs might be a little more accommodating if there were naming rights available, similar to Beau’s Oktoberfest & Members of Barleyment Annual Homebrew Competition.

I wonder if Propeller would be interested in hosting? I know they haven't in the past but I think they have the space to accommodate.

I'm not against brewery sponsorship but we don't have much time for naming. Most of the competitions have club names or a play on words. I'm happy to avoid the word homebrew. Brewnosers keeps it more inclusive than NS, craft beer week is just a convenient and great tie in.

Challenge, Competition, Awards?

Keith, sounds awesome.

Can one of you guys in Halifax in contact with the breweries search around for venue options? 1-3 options, free or cost, good light, low aroma, etc. Looking for one person to lead the charge on this.

I can help in whatever way I can from NB, not sure I can make it up for the comp, but could answer questions or something via e-mail.

I agree that we should keep it separate from any breweries (unless one wants to offer a collab brew with the Best-of-Show, or sponsor a major prize), and I also think we should go ahead with the planning as if we are not at all a part of the NS Craft Beer Week. That is put on by the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia, and may not want our event as part of their week. Until we get confirmation, we should really go about it independently.

They are in the midst of scheduling events now, and I've already been in contact with them making suggestions, so, if people are OK with it, we should have just one person bugging them about our inclusion. So send me the suggestions and I pass them along.

There's only one I question I can think of. Do they want our competition, and Keith's learn to brew, to be a part of it or separate?

I'm not really a fan of the naming. I think it's too vague on what it really is. It's a homebrew competition, so why not call it that? Brewnosers Homebrew Competition is my vote.

IMO if it's "craft beer week" we can do whatever we want. We may not be an official part of craft beer week, but that doesn't mean we can't align the competition/awards/learn to brew around craft beer week. That would be like saying a bar can't provide a "craft beer week special".

Alright, looks like Brewnoser's Homebrew Competition is the popular vote.

Thanks Chris, I haven't had much luck getting a hold of anyone from the CBA. We'll continue planning as an independent, but I hope they'll be interested in working together some. Homebrewers are major supporters of the craft beer scene, and I think most if not all of the professional brewers (and many of their staff) have homebrewed at some point.

Plan is to judge the weekend prior, with potentially the BOS and Awards during CBW. I'd like to see it as part of the Saturday festival. Nice crowd, a lot of us and the competitors will be there. Exposure for the club and the event.

Maybe I should have put it as "It may or may not be promoted as an official event as part of NS Craft Beer Week, by the CBANS". Of course, we can do it whenever we like, but it would help promote the competition/events if they were mentioned in the official promotional material for the group. Which they may shoot down, because we're not members, or it doesn't fit in with their overall strategy. So, we shouldn't rely on that.

I was hoping we could get away from the word homebrew. The implication, for those not in the know, is that it is inferior to commercial beer, and not the real thing. We know that isn't true, and people who brew at home make just as good beer, and often it's better. It was when brewing at home was legalized in the US in 1979 that the craft brewing movement started. Just prior to that, there were only 17 breweries in the entire US. I'm glad they don't call it "home brewer of the year," it’s “brewer of the year”. We're brewers at the forefront of brewing, and the word home brewers, although modest, suggests the opposite. We have an opportunity to change that. As I said before, you don’t get “home artists” , “home musicians”, “home chefs”, home mechanics, home anything.

I agree with the simplicity of Brewnosers hombrew competition. Often when you get too fancy with names it is less cool, and makes it seem you are trying to be something you are not.

Does home have to be in there?

Could it simply be Brewnosers Craft Beer Competition? Brewnosers beer competition?

Home should be in there as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps there is stigma, but we should be proud that we're producing such great products in our homes. There's no point in hiding that.

Since you put it like that. :)

Would we be able to possibly offer some free samples of the great beer we produce at the Learn to brew day or would there be laws that would prevent this?
