Give it time and demand - remember, they are only a week old, and may have some growing pains.

Isn't this also the policy of some other breweries/brew pubs around here?

I'm pretty sure almost all of them have dropped that rule..but I'm not 100% sure.

I am with you, I will refuse to purchase more glassware unless I actually want it....like the Unfiltered Growler, that is pretty sweet.

None of the breweries had the policy save for Garrison, and they still have it as far as I know.

Didn't know who did/didn't have the rule - I just wasn't aware of anyone not filling other breweries growlers.

I can't understand why a business would turn a customer away for not using their glassware.

Old skool marketing. When I lived in California in the mid-nineties no brewer would fill other brewers jugs. There weren't nearly as many breweries around back then and it's just old school train of thought. Like putting Pepsi in a Coke bottle, it ain't happening.

None of the other breweries here had a similar policy.

Garrison has only ever refused my non-garrison growler once, and that was in 2007ish... mind you, I don't buy their beer that much

Hopefully Breton changes this rule, its a pretty dumb policy, and it could be chalked up to being new for sure

Granite only exchanges empty growlers for full ones so you're expected to use theirs. The one time I took my Propeller growler in I got a Granite growler back.

Garrison will fill other growlers. In my "research" (I'm compiling a growler policy list) any place that fills will fill whatever you bring in. Those that swap will likely only swap for their own, but some (Paddy's) will swap any NS growler. I mostly starting putting the list together since I don't have any more room for dedicated growlers.

I'd love to hear it, too. I'm helping Toni with the research of what the breweries do. I had sent out an email to the open breweries, but didn't want to bug you about it just yet. But I'll forward you that email now, respond at your leisure.

Hi Gents!
Our growler fill policy was put in place in order to ensure that our beer was put into properly cleaned/sanitized growlers. By purchasing and refilling Breton Brewing growlers we are positive that the customer is getting a properly cleaned and sanitized growler every time the consumer re-fills. We recommend for the average consumer to purchase our growler so that we can ensure the highest quality of product. We also recognize that there are consumers out there (Brewnosers, etc.) that do take pride in the cleanliness of their bottles. For these reasons we will be following in the brewing community's footsteps and will be offering fills on any growler.
As a side note to this, we were charging a deposit on our growlers which makes them fully refundable at any point. This would have allowed the consumer the option to relieve their growler stock burden at any time (of Breton Brewing Growlers).
Also, to help ensure that the average customer is getting a properly cleaned and sanitized growler we will be offering a Breton Brewing growler fill punch card of some sort in the near future.
Sorry for the confusion! We are trying to ensure the consumer gets the best quality product available.
Currently At Brookland Brewing, Sydney, NS:
In Kegs: Four Seas IPA, Belgian Witbier
In Carboys: Ordinary Bitter (Bitter Bonnette)
Bottled:
Next Brew: California Lager.

Thanks for the update, Andrew. If the growler is fully refundable, I don't see this as a big issue.
I am more apt to swing by Propeller or Granite (who share this policy) for a growler on a whim, knowing that I can return it for a full refund the next time I'm in.

Thanks Andrew. I do agree with the "clean and sanitized" aspect, as nothing good can come from a poor review from someone with a dirty bottle. And, like Chris said, the fully refundable deposit is a great policy. I hope to get there in a couple of weeks.

I believe you are closed on Sunday and buying a growler on Saturday would make an intermittent Caper like myself have more growlers than I need or want. Exchange/return would work if I was there for the week.

I'll stop in the next time I am on the island.

If I ever make it, it will be a one visit only type of thing (don't go to CB much, maybe once a year) so buying one and returning it would not work for me at all.

That being said, I understand wanting to give out your product in clean, sanitized vessels. Eliminates a lot of risk of customers having a bad experience that is unknowingly actually their fault. One solution some breweries are using now is to have some no rinse sanitizer on hand, just visually check the growlers are clean and give them a quick dunk in the no rinse. Not a perfect solution, but something to consider

Good to hear the new updates to your growler policy. I am all for having clean growlers (as is anyone on these forums). From personal experience I know lots of people that have filthy growlers, as I've been given a few over the years. For those consumers, exchange is the way to go and I fully anticipate the exchange policy to be for the same branding only.

I much prefer breweries that fill any (clean) growler since we tend to take day trips, often passing through areas. A couple of months ago I was in NB and filled a Rudders growler at the ANBL, and a Paddys growler at Big Tide. If they didn't accept customer growlers I would have left empty-handed. If someone only does growler exchanges that's fine, but I'm less inclined to pay them a visit. My Sea Level growlers collected dust for quite a while until HRM breweries began filling customer growlers.
