Freezer Clearing Imperial Amber

Post by mr x » Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:44 am

Well, it was time to clear out some of the old leaf hops with a big amber ale. Specifically, I put 3 lbs of hops into the keggle at 10 minutes. It actually took me 10 minutes to get them all in without boiling over. Literally like mixing cement. When I cleaned out the keggle the next day, it was half full of tightly packed hops - I had to cut them out in hunks. The smell in the house is outrageous.

The recipe is from BCS, which is basically a Red Rocket malt base. I threw in 1 lb of sugar as well to keep up the gravity.

Used -05, would have preferred 1272, but it has not arrived yet.

Must have been a weekend to brew amber ales :P I did one as well with Chinook and Cascade throughout, Nothing like the beast you've got there though! Sounds like it'll be a good one.

It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Agreed :D I also did the deshuttes black butte porter clone from CYBI but didn't get the hops I need so I went with all Chinook cause I had them. I'm thinking the piney taste from Chinook will go good in a porter.

Well, this was one crazy beer to brew. I threw in 3 lbs of hops in at the last 10 minutes. It actually took ten minutes to get them in, because the whole keggle wanted to boil over. When I emptied the keggle the next day, it was half full of hard packed leaf hops. Should be an interesting beer.

You'll have to bring it over to my place and pour it in my Deschutes Black Butte Porter glass. I bet it would taste better that way.

This beer turned out really well. And incredibly clear, up close it looks almost filtered. That's a rarity for me.

It's a really great beer. Nice aroma and hop forward.

I can attest to it personally.
