New Zealand Hop Buy?

Post by GillettBreweryCnslt » Sat Feb 27, 2016 11:41 am

I've got a line on some good NZ varieties for this year but I don't want to bring in a ton for the store (mostly for me personally). If anyone wants to get in on a box of 2015 NZ hops here is the list and link to the spreadsheet. The closing date will depend on interest, the longer we wait, the better the chance something will sell out.

Rules:
1. Payment up front if that variety will be ordered
2. Need 11 lbs to order that variety
3. Add yourself to the sheet
4. Don't mess with the formulas (unless there's a mistake).
5. The price includes shipping and there are no discounts
6. This is the price per LB

Dr Rudi - $26.99
Green Bullet - $26.99
Kohatu - $32.99
Motueka - $36.99
Nelson Sauvin - $37.99
Pacifica - $33.99
Pacific Gem - $26.99
Rakau - $27.99
Southern Cross - $27.99
Sticklebract - $27.99
Wai-iti - $34.99
Waimea - $27.99
Wakatu - $27.99

Thanks

For the record - my initial impression of pacifica was "meh" because I was expecting a fruit punch explosion (limited experience with NZ hops) but dry hopping with 50/50 that and cascade apparently makes your beer have an AMAZING mango juice aroma.

can you better describe "meh"? what were your impressions of the hop and it's flavors and aroma. Also when you talk about the dry hopping you use the word "apparently" does this mean that you are not talking to actual experience?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Pacifica is a Hallertau type hop, so it's not going to taste like some of the more fruit forward NZ hops. I like it, but yeah, if you're expecting it to be more like some of the others it'll be a bit disappointing. I used it recently for late boil hopping and dry hopping, and found it to be somewhat fruity (orange, peach), but also with some of the floral, spicy notes from German type hops. I'll probably be using it again sometime.

Yeah, the "meh" was from smelling the hops in the bag - this was also in the black box competition so who knows how old those hops were either - I just know I initially was going to avoid using them because they didn't smell as strongly as the columbus or cascade in the bag, but Sandy convinced me that it couldn't hurt to throw some in the late boil and then when it came to dry hop time pacifica and cascade was all we had left - and that combo makes for one HELL of a dry hop. Like mango marmalade or something.

I got a pound of it on the last group buy. It doesn't have that citrusy character that most new world hops have, but it does have a big peachy/apricot thing going on. If you're using it in a pale ale or IPA you'd want to pair it up with something else. I've used it in English beers too, just for something a bit different, but you wouldn't want to go overboard doing that.

Bump! We are getting close on a few of these, I'll be ordering them in the next few weeks.

If we can get to 5 lbs and anything it's likely I'll just buy the box so if you're on the fence, just do it!

Are these pellet hops?

No one else interested in the Kohatu variety? It sounds tasty.

Hey Everyone,

Hops are ordered. I ordered

Motueka
Nelson Sauvin
Pacifica

We can keep the sheet open and if we get any traction on the other hops I can always order them in as well.

Thanks

Dave

Sweet, I wanted to pick up a few things soon-ish anyway so I'll probably head out when you have these and that wyeast variety I emailed about :P

Wanted to head out last week but work got crazy busy instead.

HI Everyone,

I emailed everyone on the spreadsheet last week but no one replied so I'm not sure it sent. These have arrived and are ready for pickup.

Thanks

I received the email. I'm just trying to find a time to come out since I was just there last weekend.
