Best use for mini fridge and chest freezer

Post by Jthulu » Sat Apr 16, 2016 9:15 pm

I recently acquired a 4.5 cu/ft mini fridge and an approx 7 cu/ft chest freezer. My initial thought is building a kegerator in the mini fridge and a fermentation chamber in the freezer. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

I would switch your plans. Lifting a full carboy into a chest freezer is a pain from what I hear. At least you have fairly sturdy handles on a keg to lower them in.

Same thought as Jeff, switch plans.
I have a 7 cubic freezer, I have 4 Pepsi kegs and a 20 pound co2 in it.

Thanks for the input guys. Moving the carboys was my biggest concern, but mini fridge seems limited for fermentation. Either of you guys using one for fermentation?

I use two mini fridges for fermentation. Barely fits a 6 gallon glass carboy and airlock in front of the hump, or by propping up the front to match the hump I can use clearbrew buckets on the hump (what I usually do. No airlock required)

It fits one glass carboy easily. You have to remove all the plastic from the door and do some renovations inside. Lots of videos/tutorials online.

I use a chest-freezer for lagering/fermenting and a mini-fridge for a two tap kegerator. Both have built-in stc-1000

I use a mini fridge as a fermentation chamber and the freezer for a keezer!

I use a freezer for a keezer and a modified mini fridge as my fermentation chamber. Just built an insulated box on to the mini fridge and it will fit 2 full buckets or carboys, works great!

I just got my freezer to use as a keezer so my two mini fridges can switch to full time fermentation chamber duty as soon as I get a temp controller for the freezer (and let it sit for a few days before plugging it in after moving it). I'll just be using picnic taps for a bit until I feel like spending the time and money to put proper taps and a collar in.

For limited quantity, mini fridge is the best one. Chest Freezer usually suitable for large scale fermentation.

I use my mini-fridge for serving only. I ferment in my keezer the odd time, but use plastic carboys and they are way easier to lift in and out. I find when I dispense from my keezer with a thumb tap, any spills at all and it starts to stink.
