Stuck Fermentation.

Post by Bluefin 774 » Mon Jun 06, 2016 5:10 pm

Hello, Saturday evening I brewed a batch of Pilsner with Safbrew S-33 yeast. Sunday evening it bubbled a little but now on Monday by lunch time it seems to have stopped. It never did get very active. Can I put in another packet of yeast? I have several Copers yeast packs. The brew store is out of S-33 right now......Suggestions ?...

Thanks.
Take care, Bluefin.

check your gravity, wait 3 days check it again if the gravity drops just leave it let it do its thing. just because you don't see bubbles does mean its not fermenting. you could also try raising the temp a degree or 2

EDIT: I'm dumb, mixed up s-33 and s-23, please disregard this post.

this ESPECIALLY with lager yeast. It doesn't really krausen the same way as ale yeast in an obvious manner.

What temperature is it at?

Also the only real way to know your fermentation is stuck is definitely hydrometer readings.

S-33 is a specialty ale yeast not a lager yeast. It is a low flocculator and a low attenuator. You might try building up another more attenuator yeast and pitch it in at high krausen. See if it will get a couple more points for you.

Yup. Definitely wouldn't pitch S33 on a Pils. I used S33 in a stout the only time I ever used it. A few weeks back I had an all grain brown ale on Danstar Windsor that wouldn't hit its final gravity. I pitched a starter of Safale US04, warmed the batch and hit it with that. It finished close to the expected final gravity.
At Bat: several Czech Pils
On Deck: Cream Ale
In the Hole: Kolsch
Clean Up: Tall Ships Ale clones
On tap: Propeller Pils, Festa Cream Ale

Thanks for the advice. Checked my gravity and it was not dropping very much, so I pitched a package of Coopers yeast on it and it worked out fine so far. It is in the carboy and being dry hopped with an ounce of Citra. I've had this before and it was great.
Take care, Bluefin.
