Thermowell for a thermocouple?

Getting into electric brewing...

Does a thermowell always have to be used in conjunction with a thermocouple?

I see that on the electric brewery page Kal doesn't seem to use a thermowell.

I use these ones. They just thread into a 1/2" pipe thread port. No thermowell req'd.
