Extract Beer Gravity Too High

Post by McGruff » Thu Oct 05, 2017 8:56 am

I made an all extract AIPA a few days ago. Promash said my OG would be around 1.051. It was 1.068. I can't figure out why?

15 Gallons

20 lbs. United Canada Extract
9 ozs. corn sugar ( no reason to use it )

I used RO water and just filled up my kettle to around 15 gallons along with the extract. I estimated that after I added the extract, my total water used was around 12 gallons. So I guess I need to re-calculate it, but not sure how.

So your beer will be 2% stronger than called for? Call it an Imperial AIPA, maybe you've invented a new style?
On Tap:
Irreplaceable Pale Ale
On Deck:

Fermenting
Black IPA
Planning
Irish Red Ale

LME. I didn't plan on a 7% beer. I like to be around 5%. I plan on using 16 lbs. of LME for my next brew. This stuff isn't very nice to work with from a 66 lb. pail. My scale is only good for 5 lbs. at a time.

Did you by chance have less that 15 Gallons once finished? if you ended up with lower volume, you probably had higher boil-off causing less water and more sugars
