I hear a lot people of saying not put a sample port on carboy due to risk of infection and all that other stuff...
I brew 2.5 gallon batches and was looking to get the fastferment 3 gallon conical once it comes out but i may just switch to PET bottles with a port..
Those who are using plastic carboys/buckets or even SS brew buckets is the sample port something you would consider very usefull or just stick with the wine thief to pull samples?

Re: Sample Port on carboy
I drilled one of my ClearBrew fermenting buckets to add a spigot a few years back. It is nice for drawing samples and racking, however, the spigot had a tendency to leak.
If you're going to go with a spigot, I'd be sure to remove it for cleaning after every use...boil any parts that you can (ie: oring/gasket).

I personally would stick to the wine thief.

My post wasn't necessarily in support of a spigot - I'd actually go without one if I was using buckets/carboys...but there is something nice about being able to draw a sample without having to haul out & sanitize a wine thief.
Just buy Rubbetoe's conical off him, and you won't have to worry about it!

Would love a conical but only doing 2.5 gallons! Thinking maybe I could go stainless and get the 3.5 gallon brew bucket or the anvil 4 gallon fermenter....Jimmy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 23, 2017 10:54 amMy post wasn't necessarily in support of a spigot - I'd actually go without one if I was using buckets/carboys...but there is something nice about being able to draw a sample without having to haul out & sanitize a wine thief.

Haha, I'm still on the fence about it. 14.5 gallon stainless steel, butterfly valves. PM me if interested so we don't thread hijack.
