Re: Black Box Challenge
We brewed ours on the 10th. A decently complex NEIPA and very simple low ABV Saison dry hopped with amarillo.
Now the question is what to do about the friggin green tea and ginger. I can see it playing well if used very sparingly with the saison but with the NEIPA I think it would take a little random luck.
I feel like it really shouldn’t matter if it’s used or not but I like the challenge of having that x ingredient in there it’s just a gamble because it could ruin an otherwise great beer.

Re: Black Box Challenge
I managed to squeeze 3 - 5 gal batches out of all the ingredients. The first one I brewed is kegged and carbed...very happy with how it turned out. 2nd I kegged and am dry hopping now...waiting to see how this one is when it is carbed before I decide which one I'll submit. I brewed a 3rd one last night for shits and giggles. It won't be even remotely close to being ready for submitting...but I wanted to make the most out of all the ingredients that came with the challenge. Dare say I got my $$$ worth.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Printing out pictures sounds expensive. I know that last year I did no such thing; I provided a link to an iCloud photo album or a Google Drive folder or something. Now I'm curious whether other people printed or are printing actual pictures.
I didn't get my entry brewed until last Sunday so who knows if it'll even be worth entering. But I can say that I've got another recipe all queued up in Beersmith called "Money's Worth APA"mckay75 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 06, 2018 1:05 pmI managed to squeeze 3 - 5 gal batches out of all the ingredients. I know I felt like I was dumping money last year when I found the leftover grain six months later and had to throw it out.

I e-mailed BR yesterday - because, being a newbie - I wasn't sure if we could just e-mail pictures / google drive OR they preferred them printed. Henry got back to me and said that they prefer them printed since there are a couple different judges.
I guess it makes it easier to keep the beers and pictures all together?
But this is proving more difficult that I thought - I was gonna use the Kodak machine at the SS out by me (St. Margaret's Bay) to print them right from my phone - but they just friggin got rid of em. Guess I'll have to check Wally World or a different SS.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Kegged 'em both last night. Man does the IPA smell good, cant wait to get some bubbles in there. Probably going to have to go buy a decent saison to mine compare to; and suggestions? Not sure which to submit.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Bottled mine last night. Happy with the outcome...although the green tea faded pretty quickly. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing as i hate the damn shit. I sampled the carbed version of the 2nd beer I made for the comp last night and am now torn on which one to submit. It is a session IPA that I fermented with US05 at 10C. Very juicy...lots of peach. I may be doing another bottling session tonight lol.

Re: Black Box Challenge
judging takes place on monday evening
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
