December 2019 Exchange - Dec 15 - APA 'annual rush job'

December 15th - American Pale Ale - 'Annual Rush Job'

OG 1.050
FG 1.012

Mashed @153F for about 3hrs (BIAB, dropped about 6 degrees over before I pulled the bag)
~5% ABV
Grains
90% Marris Otter
7% Crystal 40
3% Wheat
Hops
60mins 0.6oz Columbus
5mins 1oz each of Falconers Flight, Amarillo, Citra
0mins 1oz Falconers Flight, 1oz Amarillo, 2oz Citra
Dry Hop (3 days) 2 oz Citra, 1oz Amarillo
Yeast US05

Fermented at 20c, then after a few days bumped it to 22c to finish up. Dry hopped for a few days before I cold crashed and kegged.

Force carbed and bottled.

I've since had a sample bottle and I'll crack one the day before and keep my thoughts silent until others chime in. Any and all feedback welcomed! This is my first brew since last years exchange. Had to dust off the gear.

Is a white black IPA a thing? That is what I thought of when I drank this for some reason.

Could definitely taste the Maris Otter as a base... I usually only put a couple pounds of MO in my IPAs - this tasted pretty malty and fairly bitter as well. Had just a touch of green apple in the BG as well.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Another fantastic APA this year. I downed this pretty fast over dinner. So good!

Just had this to kick off a few catch up beers. This was awesome. I have a soft spot for any Pale Ale but this hit it out of the park. Crystal Clear, beautiful head, carbonation spot on, lots of hops yet still some sweet Malt coming through. Thanks for the beer!

Great beer, well carbonated, loved the hop character.

First official beer of my xmas holiday and I’m glad it was. Plenty hoppy, with a nice malt backbone. Maaaybe a touch of acetaldehyde, but that’s hair splitting. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer; thanks for sharing!!

I split this one with my brother tonight, it went down pretty quick. All good, pleasantly bitter.

Splitting this with my buddy right now and it's absolutely delicious!

Good carb, pours clear, bitterness is very nice, great aroma, and a nice malt character to finish it off .

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Glad it was enjoyed. The marris otter gives a malty feel which I'm into but it's not for everyone. Happy Holidays
