Honey for mead

Post by Tomead » Sun Nov 07, 2021 11:50 am

I have access to raw honey (from a local Nova Scotia honey producer) that has small amounts of beeswax and water mixed in with it. He can't sell it because it has the water in it; average sugar content is about 75 to 80 BRIX, so is almost pure honey. I get it in 5-gallon pails, and one pail makes about three carboys of mead. If you are interested in a 5-gallon bucket please let me know.

I will take one. How much does he want for them?

Hi Mike,
I have three buckets left. I'll trade you an empty (clean) primary fermenter with lid for one filled with honey water. No charge for the honey because I got it for free myself and am happy to pass it on that way. The Actual BRIX of this lot is 66.7, so not quite as pure as the last batch I got, but still plenty of sugar for mead making. If you go with a 10 % abv mead then one bucket should still produce three carboys of mead.

Sounds great. I will go buy some buckets+lids this week sometime. What part of town are you located in?

I'm in Chester, but I end up in HRM often. I can probably deliver. If I don't get any other responses by 15 Nov you can have all three. But, you'll need to keep them cool until you start fermenting them or they'll start to ferment on their own.

Perfect, thanks! If an HRM meet would work, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll make a Chester run.

Sure, you got the last one!

I'll be in HRM tomorrow. I can deliver if you like. Payment of an empty (clean) primary fermenter bucket with lid on delivery would be appreciated. Thanks!

That would be awesome. I'm at work until 4 and live in north end Halifax. If an earlier time would be better, I think a friend's office in the Hydrostone could be a dropoff point.

Maybe next year. If there is enough interest I'll get as much as I can and post a similar message next November.

We can split my bucket. More people in the club making mead the better.

Great idea, Mike! Each bucket should make upwards of three 23-litre batches.

I’ll be in HRM today with three buckets of honey water for those who spoke first. I need to know where to drop them off. I need the three lucky mead makers to give me address and time info. Thanks.
