Re: Big Spruce Homebrew Challenge 2022
Nice! I was thinking about there not having been a comp in awhile. I think I'll probably give this one a go too if I can find some ferementor space.
"(Note: anyone wishing to use a yeast strain they procure themselves is welcome to do so!)"
Interesting, I really like the St. Remy so I'll likely stick with it but this might be a good opportunity to stick out from the crowd.

Re: Big Spruce Homebrew Challenge 2022
I brewed a dubbel on Saturday (4 Dec), hopefully it's comp-worthy! I used the St. Remy's for this as well. I'd guess it's the Rochefort strain. I'm also planning to chuck a Belgian Dark Strong onto the cake once it's done! I have only entered a comp once before, so this will be a fun opportunity to be submitting a beer rather than judging.
On Tap:
Janet's Brown Ale
Brewing Next / Now Fermenting:
Dry Stout
Slow Burners
3x Lambic-style batches
4 variants of 2023-harvest ciders

Ah, yeah I think it was actually the WLP540/Westmalle that I had used, not the 530/Rochefort. Wouldn't mind grabbing a bottle before brewing since I haven't had one in awhile, but Belgian stuff is slim pickins around here lately.

Re: Big Spruce Homebrew Challenge 2022
Long shot, but I don't suppose anyone still has yeast from this they saved or didn't use? Checked with Jeremy earlier in the month and he said he was out of yeast but would be getting more. Would prefer not to leave brewing for this much later if I'm going to do it but I don't think Escarpment is shipping again until early Jan.

I'd be happy to pick up and compensate you for it if either of you aren't planning on using it.

Will do! It's coming across a *little* cidery at the moment but we'll see how it turns after it's had some time to clear up a bit.

We bottled our entry today! Good luck to all. I love this competition so much, it is truly the gold standard for any comps I've ever been in.

Re: Big Spruce Homebrew Challenge 2022
They posted this on the BS facebook yesterday:
"What a huge number of entrants this year! We had to get the great folks at Escarpment Yeast Labs to send more yeast! Thank you to all those that have paid their entry fee. A lot of you are asking about drop off points for your entries - please email to request confirmation of the location and remember you can also drop entries off at the brewery during hours of operation. We will also send a group email to all entrants.
Regrettably, due to COVID restrictions, we will have to cancel the 4pm Gala at Wooden Monkey to announce the winners. We will endeavour to find an adequate way to make this up to you all, either in our swag sent to entrants, or at a later date when we can gather.
Good luck to you all!"

Bummer about the awards getting cancelled, probably the best call though.

Re: Big Spruce Homebrew Challenge 2022
Just got home from judging this and can say the quality was really very good. Nine beers came through my table and though there was definitely a range of scores, none of them were undrinkable.
One thing I will say, though, is TAKE YOUR PACKAGING SERIOUSLY. We had a couple beers that we think would have been really excellent and would have scored higher if they’d had a better carb. We also had one that we literally judged twice because one judge had the presence of mind to ask for a second bottle. Sure enough, the flaw from the first bottle (dish soap, we thought) wasn’t present in the second and it went from a decent score with flaws to a trip to the final table.
All in all I’m glad I decided to drink Dubbel on a February Sunday afternoon rather than enter the comp myself Great job folks, some lovely beer being brewed in our region!!
