Nanobreweries?

Do you guys know of an easier way to get an Excise permit other than spending $300/year on insurance or paying the $5000 bond?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the comments over the past few days. THe posts in the first few pages were very good, lots to think about. Next time I am down by Cherry Hill I will have to stop in at Hells Bay.

I also have to say that Mr. X's comment about the mobile van was neat. The motion that would be generated traveling on our pot hole ridden streets would aerate the wort nicely!

I'm new to all-grain brewing but am also interested in starting a Nano. I've talked to Mark at Hell Bay (Can't get a better guy than this and great beer) I have been approved for the zoning but the start up costs are still high. The highest cost is insurance. If anybody has any ideas about cheaper insurance I would love to hear it. As for the NSLC changing the cost for a Nano that's not going to change how many start up.
I'm interested in hearing from people who have kicked the tires so to speak.

What NSLC charges is a big factor depending on volume. I would say hell bay is outside nano range with their volume. For somebody brewing at the homebrew nano level, i'm not paying those nslc fees. What you are looking at is a micro.

Clause 1A(1)(ga) added: O.I.C. 2001-371, N.S. Reg. 98/2001.

(h) "cottage-brewery," "micro-brewery" or "mini-brewery" means a small free-standing brewery which produces less than 15,000 hectolitres of beer per year;

This is from the Nova Scotia Liquor control act. This was just a condensed version of the regulations, maybe it goes on to further classify names by output. 1.5 million litres is quite a bit of beer.

I was amazed by some of the equipment the guys dragged out to BSBNB last June. My equipment wouldn't fit in my car (yet: I think I'm going to try the brew-in-a-bag, which could reduce the size immensely). One guy actually had quite a bit more equipment than me, but it was clearly designed to be broken down and fitted into a small wagon.

Someone, somewhere, had pointed out that a nano would be 1/1000th of a micro

therefore, a nanobrewery would produce up to 15 hectolitres of beer annually, or 1,500 litres

hopefully the NSLC will make the licensing fees equal to 1/1000th of the microbrewery fees

It was likely someone Greek. Of course, unlike a few loud people on here you'd have to subscribe to the metric system to believe it.
