Games

Post by Graham.C » Mon Apr 02, 2012 1:02 pm

I have noticed that there are a few of us who like to sit down to a game of settlers (or whatever) with our tasty brews. I figure I would start this thread to get an idea of who likes to play games, maybe then we can start planning a beer and game night once and a while. I put in the bit on cards because I know poker/crib/etc players are always on the lookout for other groups to play with, although its not my thing.

Great Idea! I'm a board/card game geek and I know there are a few others.

I'm occasionally play card games and board games, I've been to Tim's play to play settlers and drink some of his tasty arrogant bastard clone :chug:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Yes, I've been trying to organize this for a while but have yet to make it happen (Tim?).

Pretty sure I've got a few decks of those kicking around here as well, they're likely more in the realm of 1992-94 or 5 though.

Awesome. I'd understand what's going on with that vintage. Someone showed me the new stuff and it might as well be written in Swahili.

I'm up for a game/beer night. I've met a number of people who enjoy Settlers, but have never played. Poker would certainly be fun, but I rarely have more than a couple beer when playing.
Even though I'm a former D&D geek, I never got into the Magic cards thing.

It may be time to wander over to Gamezilla next time I'm in Moncton.

Funny, last x-mas I was cleaning out my Mom's basement when I came across my old decks. A buddy talked me into bringing them back with me but we never played. There's a good bet they are 95 vintage or earlier.

Andy, I have a good sized library of games if you want to borrow any before you buy. I also have Arkham horror which is a survival horror D&D like game that plays in an afternoon. Really fun but really nerdy.

I'll play just about anything. My game of choice these days is bridge, but like Andy, I'm an old D&D'er. Also, like Andy, I didn't finish my first degree - and I blame D&D. It took me 34 years to eventually get my B.S.

I'd be down with poker as long as you guys don't go super high stakes or anything. I just bought a house.

We have all the catan games so if anyone's up for it feel free to set something up.

I usually just play $10 games to keep them fun, I find if you play for more than that it gets too serious.

Considering I am basically a glorified statistician, I suck at poker, but I could be talked into a game at 10 bucks. I live to far away to plan anything regular, but if you guys are playing sometime post it and I might be able to make it.

Same deal. Although maybe next time I am in town we can set something up. We are also talking about having a games and beer night under the SAAZ thread if anyone is out our way on the 14th. I have a spare room if consumption gets too high.

I like playing new games, but if we're playing for money it's poker and I rarely drink

I'll be bringing some games to Big Strange Brew. That's another incentive for some of you to go.

I've heard of this before (and the thought has even crossed my mind to design my own brewing board game), but thought of it again because of this discussion. Does anyone here actually have this game, or at least has played it? It would certainly be a good one for one of our game nights.

I have thought about ordering it but it has horrible reviews at BBG. I would like to play it sometime.

I too have toyed with designing my own game, I bet we could come up with a better design. It sounds to me like this is just beer themed rummy-ish game.

I only see a few reviews there and they're mostly positive. What am I missing?

Yeah, I see that now. I meant overall score not review. My bad. Now that I read it again I think it seems more fun then when I checked it out a year ago. Maybe I am just becoming that much more of a beer nerd.

Scores are at the top 5.6/10. Most games that are worth playing get at least a 6.5-7 on that site, but I find it is highly skewed towards eurogames (settlers, Carcassonne. power grid, etc) and battle games (warhammer).

apparently. I spent today (one of few days off) reading most of designing great beers by Ray Daniels because I wanted to know more about grain bitterness in stout.

Didn't help me but I learned a bunch. Good read overall.
