Craft Beer in Boston?
I'll be in Boston in a few weeks time for a conference and I'm sure there are lots of decent places to drink some craft beer. Any suggestions?

I was in Boston last year and went to The Publick House. I'd highly recommend it.

Boston has a lot of great pubs. Having lived there, the best on tap selection is the Sunset Grill and Tap on Commonwealth. It is a bit out of the way, but worth it. Here is a recent list of their beer menu:

For craft brewery's, there is one near Fenway Park, but I can't recall its name. If you head up there, you can't miss it.

It's Boston Beer Works by Fenway, worth a visit for sure. They have a few locations, Fenway is the original.
Red Bones BBQ is a MUST, well, only if you like craft beer and BBQ that is. Don't take too long deciding what beer you want or you'll get the great wheel of indecision treatment
Sunset Grill and Tap is okay, great selection, some may be not so fresh, food is average.
Here's a list of breweries in the area listed by overall rank, highest first:

Re: Craft Beer in Boston?
There is also a new brewery down there called Backlash http://backlashbeer.com/beers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; looks pretty interesting if you like belgian style beers.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I liked John Harvard's when I was there but it's technically in Cambridge - easy to get to on public transit. I also stopped at Beer Works by Fenway and I liked it too - good selection of beers brewed in house.
I know there were a few others I stopped at as well but I don't have my notebook with me. I used beerme to find them but looking at the list now, no others ring a bell.

Re: Craft Beer in Boston?
So where did you end up going for craft beer? My father, brothers and I are going down to see the Pats vs. Colts game in Boston on Nov 18th. We'll be arriving in Boston late-afternoon on Saturday and staying till Monday morning. The evenings are pretty wide-open so I'm exploring the beer-related options.

Looks like we're going to be staying in Foxboro but traveling into Boston both evenings. Would like to go to Sam Adams for a brewery tour but the timing won't work because the last tour starts at 3. What would be the best place to find their rare stuff? Right at the brewery or would the local beer stores have it?

Also, where would be a good place to stop, eat and hopefully buy some beer on the trip down? Somewhere about 4hrs from Fredericton and Boston.

What Nash said... There is also a nice brewpub next to TD Banknorth (also Beerworks).
Nova Prime Taproom
Tap 1: Festa Brew Scotch Ale
Tap 2:

I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber

What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Re: Craft Beer in Boston?
There's a place in Freeport called Gritty McDuff's which I've heard is good but haven't been able to go to since turning 21. It was closed yesterday morning at 11 so we went to Linda Bean's instead. Freeport is a little over five hours from Fredericton but if you guys are looking to do any shopping at all it's probably worth straining your stomachs.hogie wrote:Also, where would be a good place to stop, eat and hopefully buy some beer on the trip down? I went to Gritty's a year or two back and remember it being pretty decent.

Re: Craft Beer in Boston?
For the dive bar crowd there's a spot in the Back Bay adjacent Berklee College of Music called Bukowski's (50 Duncan St, near Boylston St & Massachusetts Ave). It overlooks the turnpike. It's cash only and I didn't try the food. It's located about 15 minutes from Fenway on foot, and is perhaps 20 minutes from MIT, across the Charles. (They have a second location in Cambridge) They have a decent selection of beer which changes frequently. It's about $6-8 per pint depending on what you're getting. I had the Ithaca Flower Power and loved it. The bonus is that it's about 250m from Pavement Coffeehouse, which was excellent as well.
