Agreed - in my opinion the thing that could really turn around the event is to convince the NSLC to carry more craft beer from away. Why would a craft brewery spend money to be at a festival when they stand no chance to actually sell beer in that market? I think were it not for Premier and their selection, most of the craft breweries that fall into this category wouldn't show up - maybe I'm wrong about that, but putting on my business hat for a second, I know I wouldn't bother.

Last year was my first year to actually attend and I went in the afternoon. I honestly can't say I remember the music being too loud but maybe it's different at night. I also recall all the big breweries being deader than dead - people were there to try new (good) stuff as best I could tell. Again, I'm sure the night time crowd is a different story. However, I do see having the mega swill being present as an opportunity to attract folks to an event they otherwise would not have attended where there is craft beer, and who knows, they might even take a break from mega swill to try something good and begin their transition to drinking good beer.

I would like to see the event advertised a little differently - market the afternoon session to the beer geeks. Give the mega swill booths the afternoon off, or even turn it into two separate events - but keep some craft beer there for the swill nights for the reason I mentioned above. Anyhow, I liked the afternoon session enough last year to buy a ticket again this year. However, by the sounds of it, if I had attended an evening session I'd have left pretty pissed off. Hopefully it can evolve into what could potentially be an awesome event - let's face it, it's still the closest thing to a beer festival we've got in Halifax at this point.

We've gone all but one year (all Saturday afternoons) and the improvement we saw last year was that the mega brands were all placed at one end by the stage, while the craft beer was at the opposite end. As Jayme mentioned, the craft section was definitely busier than the Moosehead / Coors / Keiths booths. Unfortunately, my wife and sister-in-law aren't big craft beer drinkers so I spent the afternoon walking back and forth between the two sections. I also agree that having the big breweries present will attract some people who may try and like craft beer. I've seen improvements at each event, and no event will be perfect. For now, it is what it is ... a place to go and taste a few beer on a Saturday afternoon and hopefully have a good time doing it.

I wasn't planning on going but now that Stephen is doing the dinner I will come down for that, and stay for the media walk through Friday. I'm doing a preview/Beaumont interview story on it for The Coast. I'm somewhat tentative about addressing the "why are the other Hali brewers not there" angle, because all it does it get me grief from brewers. I don't need more enemies. I mean, really, does anyone but the serious beer nerds in this forum care at all about Garrison vs Propeller or Nash vs the world ;) ?

I always liked that line from Almost Famous:
My advice to you. I know you think those guys are your friends. You wanna be a true friend to them? Be honest, and unmerciful.

I don't frame it as one person against another, I see it more as a project in need of progression towards better beer and less slop. Really, isn't that what craft brewing is staking it's claim on? Once the big brewers are gone, or the mass marketed 'beer' they pummel us with is gone (meaning they can brew a good beer if they wanted to), I'll come down. Other than that, not interested in any of it.

I loved that movie... It is good advice. The problem is that the beer community is so tight here, since we are a small market, that we know each other too well. :cheers3: I generally take the approach that I don't write about bad beers, i just write about the good ones. :spilly: If I don't write about it, it probably wasn't appealing to me. If I'm asked for feedback I am brutally honest. And I do tell the brewers when I think they have off beers for sale somewhere. They have never reacted negatively, other than sometimes replying with something like: "We've tested it and there is no DMS problem!" They always say thanks for telling me (they may, privately, call me a dick, but I don't really care about that. Sometimes I am a little bit like Jeff :rocky: )

On the occasions that I have addressed negative things in the media, there has been major drama afterwards.

To answer your question, I don't have any fucking idea what anybody else thinks anymore, lol. I've wrapped myself in this warm cozy cocoon of beer, far away for the normal world....

Really, I doubt that many care about inter-brewery issues - but the Seaport Festival being run by Garrison guarantees that some of the locals won't want to be represented.

I may regret asking this, but what is all the bad blood with Garrison in town about? I know Nash's story of course, and heard they stole some tap handles from Propeller in some sort of a greasy fashion, but there must be more to it than just that..?

My brother will be down from Ottawa at that time, so we will definitely be going to the Sat afternoon session And we might volunteer at the Friday evening one, haven't decided yet.

For those going, be sure to grab a few business cards from me or X to hand out to booths and people who ask you about your super-cool Brewnosers hat/tshirt/hoodie. :)

I believe Venskab = Beau's Venskab: http://www.beaus.ca/beer/wild_oats/venskab" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I wonder if you can just show up to try one or two of the beers, or will they only be poured for the dinner? I ask because most of the courses will probably be seafood-heavy, which I don't do...

Yet another aspect of this dinner I did not even consider before buying tickets... Oh well - maybe it's time to learn to like seafood.

Good question. Ask John at Propeller or maybe Kevin at Granite or Lorne at Rogues. I really don't know the answer.

It's basically a stance from Allen and Titus on the festival where Titus speaks of emphasis on the craft brewers, reducing the big brewers and eventually moving towards 100% craft with local support & participation but also, in yesterday's article he does speak of the $100,000 budget and 6 months of preparation work which "there had better be something to show for" referring to the profits.

Allen's point eludes to the disinterest in donating otherwise sellable product for competitor gains and missing the true appreciation of craft beer which is spelled out well in the article too: http://atlanticcanadabeerblog.wordpress ... lifax-n-s/

In my mind the ideal case would be a local collaborative of multiple groups to share the efforts, are compensated accordingly for their efforts with no dominant bias and the major gains result in the appreciation of good beer which the entire industry will profit from continuously as the market continues to grow with fuel from our wallets.

I read that ACBB post earlier - what's really interesting in it is the mention of Propeller organizing a craft beer fest in the winter!

I also highly doubt the rivalry between Propeller & Garrison is based solely on the fact that the Seaport beer fest yields a profit from breweries donating beer (or the beer fest in general). First of all, I believe that is the standard practice of most beer festivals. Second of all, argue all you like about it not being a good place to market your beer, it is still marketing, not donating. Donating would be if the fest were a not for profit charity event and you get a tax credit IMO. Anyhow, all I'm really getting at is that I suspect the two breweries don't get along for reasons beyond the beer fest - and I'm curious as to what those are!

It is safe to say that John and Brian don't like each other. As to why, well I'm sure it is best explained by them. I guess it depends on whose side you are on. I suspect they both think the other is a total asshole.
