How long will a Growler keep - Gahan's Beach Chair Lager

Post by Earl » Thu Aug 30, 2012 8:30 pm

Can someone tell me how long a growler of beer will keep? I was at Gahan House Microbrew yesterday and bought a growler of their Beach Chair Lager. I am obviously a rookie at buying growlers as it says on the bottle to consume within 48 hours. I assume the bottle label is likely close to being accurate and I need to consume it this weekend?

In terms of Beach Chair Lager itself, does anyone know if they have it at the NSLC already? I was hoping to be able to come to my first Brewnoser's meeting in September and bring some cans of it that I brought back. I know the PEI Beer Guy didn't rate it very high and I agree with him that it isn't a WOW kind of beer, but I would not say it is bland. Well at least not if you are comparing it against the mass market lagers that it is likely competing against. Maybe I was in the sun too long while I was on vacation in PEI, but I'd much preferred reaching for a quality craft beer to quench my thirst rather than a Miller lime or Corona that was more readily available in other's coolers. Anyway, if it isnt already in the NSLC, I thought I'd bring some and let folks give it try.

If Beach Chair is already readily available here for others to try on their own, I will try to find another option to bring to the next tasting night.

How long growlers are good for depends on lots of factors, but once open should be drank within 2 days max afaiac. I always drink the whole thing in a sitting.

If I remember correctly, Gahan pours direct from the tap at the bar, so the "consume within 48 hours" is probably good advice.

I just got two filled in PEI at Gahan and yes they are filled from the taps at the bar and should be drank within the first few days. The IPA I left in growler for a week or two and I found that it was fairly flat and did not have much head.
JUST BREW IT

Thanks Guys. Looks like I know what I will be drinking tonight. By the way, the PEIBeer Guy replied to me and confirmed that Beach Chair isnt yet in NS, so I will save my cans and bring them to the meeting in September. I also have some Gritty"s Pale Ale that I will also bring.

Cheers

I went to school over in PEI and bought 3 growlers from Gahan to bring back to Cape Breton for the weekend. Then I noticed the "drink within 48hrs" label. Needless to say I didn't make it to class the next day. :spilly:
Currently At Brookland Brewing, Sydney, NS:
In Kegs: Four Seas IPA, Belgian Witbier
In Carboys: Ordinary Bitter (Bitter Bonnette)
Bottled:
Next Brew: California Lager.
