It's a lot of issues at work. MLT geometry, etc. Stu's math looks right to me.

You can, but the higher temperature ( 160 to 170f ) disolves the sugars easier and your efficiency will increase.

I'm not sure you would see that much of an increase.

I generally batch sparge at < 170 but rarely do it go below 160f.
I think the theory is sound, or at least it makes sense, but I agree you might not see a notable increase

I'm about 15mins into the mash for a simple Belgian Blonde with 1214. After tonight, I'll have 8 carboys/buckets on the go plus the 2 barrels in my basement.

Happy Holidays! :mebeer:

Now's the time to stock up. I hate the thought of brewing outside in the freezing cold this winter - but I only have 4 kegs so I'll either have to drink slow, or brew in the cold.

I have to plan around days off. Last time it was -8 to start and only -5 to finish. Will try and squeeze one more in before it gets too cold to top off at 6 kegs for the winter. Thought I already did that but have emptied 3 in the past few weeks!

Went home at lunch, mashed in the German Pilsner from BCS (using Wakatu hops).

First attempt at Jimmy's BIAB Cooler style. So far i'm liking it.

wil be back home in a few hours to boil.

You need more carboys then. I plan on storing some of that beer in carboys until the kegs are freed up.

Right on. Any water additions for this one? The pils we made last week is still bubbling along.

Not really sure yet about water additions. Gonna re-read the german pilsner section to see what they recommend. Will do water additions in the boil if need be.

I'm curious to see how you find that method. I'm getting 2 clear cut responses from people:

1) That's not BIAB...You just have an extra vessel to clean and you might as well just do 3 vessel
2) That's awesome.

I like to think it solves my 3 biggest problems with other methods:

1) Ease of cleanup
2) Maintaining mash temperatures
3) Compact setup

At the very least it's Mash In A Bag, and it's definitely easier than 3V.

Yeah the semantics are a bit fuzzy. I dont see the logic when people say might as well use three vessels. I don't have a lot of space to do a 3 vessel setup because im not lugging 3 pots up and down stairs to my deck from my basement. But at the same time mash temp is critical and really difficult in the winter to achieve so this so far is working well.

Is that better than your keggle BIAB? How did the bag work for you while draining (and what did you use as a pickup in the cooler)?
