Where to buy a fridge to convert to a Kegerator

Post by Spence » Sun Apr 07, 2013 2:12 pm

Hey everyone, I am new to brewing beer (been doing wine for a while now), just bought my first starter keg kit today - about to keg my first batch tonight! I'm having a lot of trouble finding a suitable fridge to convert to a kegerator, and it seems people do not like to reply on Kijiji. Has anyone seen anything online (Cdn Tire, Walmart, etc) that they have converted or would be a good candidate? Really looking to get this going for my first summer on the Rock.

These are a decent price for a complete kegerator (and you could easily add a 2nd tap to that tower). I'm pretty sure Costco has a Danby or Whirlpool that is good for converting, but I can't find it online.

I believe costco has a model that works, and maybe CT too. What kind of kegs do you have? If you search around, maybe in the DIY section, you might find some threads on the mini fridges.

So how did you find us?
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Thanks for the link, saw this one this morning looks cool - I think it will be my last resort, I kinda want to make one of my own, probably should just go the non-homemade route though! I heard about the Danby that Costco has for converting, but wasn't able to find it, hoping that they just ran out of stock and will be getting more.

I picked up two 5 gal corny kegs.

I did a search on the net for some east coasters that brew, I'm from NS, and lived in NB for a long time, so I figured this would be the site to join, I don't plan on leaving the east coast, and you guys are really active on the forum!

The good thing about the one in the link is that there shouldn't be a compressor bump in the back so it should allow you to store at least 3 corny kegs in it.

I believe X was referring to Pepsi or Coke kegs. They're different sizes, so some small fridges will fit 2 Pepsi (ball lock) kegs but only one Coke (pin lock).

The 4.4 cu. Ft Danby freezerless mini fridge from Costco fits two ball lock kegs if you remove the inner door panel. When I got mine, this panel was screwed on - I think some guys who got theirs afterward found that the inner panel was glued or stuck into the insulation making the mod harder but not impossible. Pretty sure that the 4.4 cu ft Whirlpool from CT is the same fridge, just costs a bit more. Hope that helps.

I juts got the 4.2cubic foot Danby from Costco a month ago, no freezer, $159 in store but showed $179 online. They were the first rack to the right when you go in the Halifax store.
The inner panel was glued on, so I had to cut the panel out, needed a good sharp Olaf knife with a long blade, takes 10minutes.
Fits 2 pepsi really nice with a 5lb Tank on the shelf in the back.
Plan to add a double tower when funds permit!
You will want to do something with the light switch, I didn't for the first few days, the beer line that is sitting on top of the kegs got warm with that bulb on all the time!
I added a picture of mine, not sure if it worked.

So, I decided to go to Costco, which as a rule is a place that I hate. Even worse, I don't like to go when I don't know where something is, cause I gotta fight through a million people to find the place. I went in, and as Swine said, turned right, and even in the St. John's store, they were right there. Picked one up! Thanks for all the help guys!!
