I'm gonna put a silicone o-ring on the inside as well in the groove in the nut.

Should I make a spreadsheet for an amazon order? So far i've got me and rubbertoe down for elements, not sure what the others want now that they are off the washers. Let me know, I was thinking of placing the order tomorrow
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

If I don't need the washers, then I think I'm good for amazon orders

does the gang box for the heating element have to be metal?

I wouldn't want anything else. $2.50 at Kent. You don't need a double wide one either, a single one it large enough.

metal for ground, right?

closest Kent is Truro, but I'll check Harris & Roome or Nedco

Any ideas for a cheap box for the controller? I wonder if it could be mounted right on the same/bigger box on the side of the keggle?

So why the two holes? Why even the cover plate if it's up against the kettle? Wouldn't it be easier to just put a 1-1/4" hole in the gang box and leave out the inside cover plate?

The gang box is too thick and there wouldn't be enough element threads sticking through.

I assume because the nut part of the element won't fit through the 1 1/4 hole and thus could not be pulled snug to the kettle.

I cringe every time I see that design...
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Got the silicone o-rings in today. I'm also quite sure that it is a 1" nut required as I had a 1 1/4 one here that is too big. I'll distribute o-rings in exchange for beer 1 for 1 as they cost me about 32 cents each (plus if you need them mailed I'll drop them in a white envelope).

I'll need one for sure. No beer at the moment... would you accept sexual favours from chalmers?

OBK has both 1" and 1-1/4" locknuts. $6.99 and $11.99 respectively. I'll organize an OBK group buy once we know what we need

I already ordered the 1" from China last week, but I could use some stuff from OBK anyway

OBK's description for the 1" is that it will fit electric water heating elements.

Their description for the 1-1/4" says it's for oversized electric water heating elements.

So that's the difference

I can also bring you an o-ring now anyway. Actually I'll bring you two in case you're planning on skipping the washer.

Don't hype my services too much before you try them. 32 cents might be overpaying.

So I'm nearly ready to get this going. I just had one unknown left. I'm going to ground the dryer cord to the box for the controller (which has a grounding screw). The wire going into the element will ground to the screw in the gang box. I just don't know where to ground the wire coming into the controller from the kettle. Thoughts?

Unless I'm misunderstanding you want to ground it to the same screw in the controller box. You want to make sure there is a good connection from the dryer core (supply) to the element (and ultimately the keg)

I'll reserve this space for a crude diagram that I'll draw today.
