Not soldered yet. Man was that a PITA to grind out the dimple.

haha, yea indeed. I'm probably going to have a bigger tool made before I attempt any again.

Make sure to use a flashlight or something to make sure there's no large gaps before you attempt to solder (or youll just end up with a mess).

And this is why people should be dimpling in the proper direction.

Don't need to. That is clearly the wrong method, unless somebody can come up with a specific reason for doing it backwards.

Bottom Drain Electric Sanke Build - "Ivan"

Post by AllanMar » Wed Mar 12, 2014 6:06 pm

I tried both and found this way provided a better result So IMO it's a better way. Clearly I'm wrong though.

The 2" is more difficult then it needs to be because the tool is the wrong size, but even still I'd do it this way again.

You are clearly wrong, and you can flog that crap over at Homebrewcock until hell freezes over for all I care. Unless the ferrule is too short to solder by dimpling in the proper direction, that method is fucked, period. The point of this forum is provide good information, not bullshit, and that's the fucking end of this.

Hm, we've got Allan saying he tried both ways and this way works better, and rob saying he doesn't have to try the other way cause "it's fucked". I agree that one attitude would fit in better at HBT, and it ain't Allan's. Is there some particular reason dimpling inwards works better?

Wow, had I known I wouldn't have dared disagree with you. Should I PM my opinions to you for approval first? At least I'm saying mine is an opinion, yours appears to be an indisputable fact.

As I admitted, dimpling inwards is easier because you can pull the ferrule in to place, so the hole doesn't have to be as precise. With the proper size tool, the hole ends up good and its easy to fit in either direction. I wanted the interior to be as smooth and clean as possible, others may not care about that (with valid reason, hence the IMO). Same thing I told jtmwhyte when I loaned him the tool.

Hopefully not, although I didn't know this would be so controversial either.

Again this seems like a moot point as I've already dimpled the hole outward. I took a look at Allan's at his place and they seemed great. I'm not in the camp of caring too much so long as the solder holds.

Bottom Drain Electric Sanke Build - "Ivan"

Post by chalmers » Thu Mar 13, 2014 8:47 am

I haven't dimpled either way, but maybe the other way allows for less solder in contact with the wort (I'm assuming the solder sits in the "moat" between the fitting and the dimple, so would be on the inside for this setup, and outside the other way)? I don't have a good reason why we need to be concerned about that, though.

It may be a bit easier the day of soldering, as you can put the keggle on its side, and access from the outside, rather than having to climb in?

But if you've already done the dimpling and assembly, and all is holding well, great!

Trevor, are you doing a group buy on these?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I could if there's enough interest. I bought one this morning, but they calculate shopping later on so I could likely order a few more.

For anyone interested it's $26.50usd for shipping to Nova Scotia

So from Stilldragon $62.50 USD all in for Shipping and the enclosure.

Brewhardware is COMPLETELY sold out but even at that it would be $49.00 + $26.00 Shipping (USD) = $75.00 USD

Brewershardware.com would be $69.00 + $10.95 shipping = $79.95 USD

Just a little help for those looking to order.

I am interested not sure if I want one or two of these kits. Will let you know by tomorrow. Does the shipping drop with more ordered or is it a flat rate for each unit?
