Wide Mouth Carboy - use with caution

Post by Maritimer » Mon Jun 02, 2014 3:07 pm

I was in the living room last night when I heard a loud crack, on my way to the kitchen I was met with a tidal bore of liquid and glass :o . The bottom completely let go on my wide mouth fermenter. Thankfully it was full of sanitizer and not beer (5 gallons of sanitizer). I think It must have cracked when I set it down on the basement floor (gingerly). It sounded different and I literally thought to myself "that sounds cheap". The cracks then spidered up the side of the carboy until it eventually burst.

The moral of the story - Be careful with these things, the are nowhere near as robust as a normal carboy.

Glad to hear no beer was lost and no one was injured!

No fun, glad no beer went to waste. Bonus at least you know your floor is sterile. lol How bad was that to clean up?

I'm sure you could imagine my relief when I saw my carboy of fresh beer intact. The sanitizer only did favors for my kitchen floor, and it cleans up better than beer.

Definitely got me thinking about keeping my carboys in rubber maids or something when they're full.

I keep mine in milk crates and never set them down on concrete and I have the good Italian ones.

I wonder if those truck bed liner sprays would adhere to glass?
