Dec 8, 2019 - APA

Post by amartin » Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:50 pm

I didn't want to do anything crazy this year, just a regular good beer that I'd want to drink. APA usually works.

OG: 1.049
FG: 1.010
IBU: 38
SRM: 6
ABV: 5.12%

Recipe was for 5 gallons.

Grains:
9 lb Canada Malting 2 row (90%)
0.5 lb Crystal 39 (5%)
0.5 lb Oat Malt (5%)

Hops:
0.5 oz Magnum 11.7% (30 minutes)
0.65 oz Cascade 7.3% (flame out)
0.75 oz Sorachi Ace 11% (flame out)
0.65 oz Cascade 7.3% (dry hop)
0.75 oz Sorachi Ace 11% (dry hop)

Water:
Well water with estimates for mineral content and some gypsum added. Probably moderately hard without too many carbonates.

Yeast:
Mangrove Jack Liberty Bell, rehydrated.

Absolutely phenomenal beer.

If it had Bret in it it would be Orval.

Need say no more

Mine was infected. unfortunately I had to dump it. The neck of the bottle was gunked up with something on the inside which looks like the culprit. Thanks anyways it happens sometimes!

Drinking this while planning future brews.

It is lovely. Great head and retention, nice body - a solid beer all around. Hops play well together too.Image

Nice carbonation and long lasting rocky head. Finishes super dry. Light bodied beer that would be a great summer crusher. Lots of citrus zest aromas. Nice one. Thanks for sharing

Having this now a day late. Pale Ales are my favourite style and this does not disappoint at all. It’s super good actually. Wish I had more than this one to drink. Great job!

Great pale ale, nice mix of citrus style hops. One of the best uses of sorachi ace I’ve come across

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Playing catch-up tonight - I think our bottle was slightly infected. At first I thought you had used a pin cherry yeast or something because it’s dominated by phenols and almost no hop flavour comes through. Oh well, it happens to us all. Thanks anyway!

Drinking this now, am slightly kicking myself for opening it despite having a cold - it tastes delicious, but I feel like in missing half of the picture as I can't really smell right now :(.

Nevertheless, it is very tasty and I'm hoping the bitterness will clear up the sinuses haha

Nice and easy drinking. Bitterness is spot on, malt character is subtle but still there to add some depth. I noticed a few notes of orange with hop resin. A bit overcarbed, but still pourable. Nice and dry. A nice beer to have after a day at work.

I drank this last weekend on the tail end of an evening of several beers, so I can’t say I remember specific tasting notes, but I do remember it being a truly excellent APA. Amazing use of Sorachi Ace without the herbal side coming through too much.
