Saying Goodbye to a faithful brew assistant.

Post by akr71 » Wed Nov 12, 2014 6:26 pm

I have been all-grain brewing for a little less than 6 years and Darwin, our chocolate lab has been there for every single one.

The last year has been hard on him, the last two months especially so. He was only 8 and a half - we expected to get a couple more years, but we couldn't bear seeing him in pain any more so we had to say good bye today.

If I went outside, he wanted to be outside too. He loved brew day. It meant I was outside for 4+ hours and during the down-time (mash, waiting for the sparge to drain, waiting for the boil) he had my undivided attention. Amazingly, not too many of my beers tasted like slobbery tennis ball.

I'm hoping you can join me in raising a pint in honor of Darwin. Here is our first brewday together.

Been there, bud, just lost one of ours two months ago at the age of 12. Feel your pain.

Sorry for your loss. All we can do is celebrate the life they shared with us.

Cheers to Darwin

Sorry for your loss. Animals have that way of wedging themselves into our lives, and it makes these times very hard.

I shall raise a glass indeed.

Sorry for your families loss Andy.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Makes me think about my own dog who is getting up there in years. It won't be a good scene. All the best.
