Random Brewing Questions

Post by GuingesRock » Sat Apr 04, 2015 9:08 am

Was up early this morning designing a DIPA. What's a good yeast to use? I was thinking of using 1056 (liquid version of US-05).

Mark I personally like to use either Conan or US05 in Hoppily Ever After.

Conan was the other one I was thinking of. Maybe I'll go with conan then. Thanks

Random question time? Ok!

If you're treating your mash water with gypsum to get 200ppm+ SO4 levels, would adding gypsum to the boil be overkill? Weird flavors?

I always add some gypsum to the boil when I'm brewing IPA/APA.

I put all my additions into the mash. But let it dissolve into the strike water first.

Is there an advantage to also adding it to the boil? I hadn't heard of that before, unless it went in one ear and out the other. Sounds interesting.

I believe there are a few threads around here discussing it. I think Nash mentioned it on a few occasions.

AFAIK it's so that you don't throw your water out of whack while mashing. If you're mashing with only part of your total water, and you add all of your water additions to the mash, shit will be off. I could be wrong, but that's the only reason I see to split them up.

It stands to reason that if you calculate your salt additions for your full volume and only add the salts to the amount that you're mashing with then the content will be off. Personally I measure my salts for my mash volume and don't bother treating my sparge water with anything except campden. I guess I'm wondering if it matters most in the mash, sparge, boil, any any or all?

Curious, what do you get for mash efficiency? Single or double crush? Credit card gap?

me too :spilly:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
