Grätzer = Smoked Wheat

Post by GasMD30 » Wed Mar 18, 2015 1:49 pm

This is slightly aimed at Dave from Everwood:

Does anyone know of a local LHBS (Atlantic) that sells smoked wheat? I would prefer to keep it in the family. I can order online but I'd prefer not to.
My goal is an amazingly effervescent Grätzer!

In the Fridge: Hawaiian IPA
Next Up:
In the Bank: Honey Blonde Bombshell, Hawaiian IPA, Mild Ale
Researching: Hard Cider

I have 5.5 pounds from a group buy that I still haven't figured out how to use. You are welcome to trade for it. I just had a leak in my basement and I am out of base grain for this weekend. If you have a pale ale malt or maybe a Pilsner malt we can trade one for one. I could also use some biscuit, victory or Amber so I could trade for that if you don't have any base grains.

It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Unfortunately I'm on a little big island so trading with you would be as expensive as buying from a dealer. Also, I don't have any grains of my own. I really appreciate the offer!

LiverDance,

Do tell about your Gratzer! What yeast did you use/enjoy. Suggestions for the grain bill? Im thinkin 80-90% smoked wheat and 10-20% of canadian pale malt.

Our Gratzer was 100% oaked smoked wheat malt and we used US-05, Bravarian Lager, Wine yeast, and some sour yeast. We are doing a tasting of 3 of them this weekend. The sour will need more time.

Sourced some oak smoked wheat malt and some Lublin hops online for this. Will use US05 and plan on gelatin to clear in the fermenter.

Nice!

I'm coming your way at the end of the month, I can probably bring a bottle over. Fire me an email in a week or so.

That'd be awesome. If you have extra room in your bag (and weight) I'll pass along a bunch of my beer for you and the guys to try and critique.
