I put all my medals and awards in my dining room and hang them on one wall. Wife says I need to keep it with my brew gear. She asked what I was doing. I said my brew gear spends more time in the dining room. So I'm following your instructions. She couldn't blame me for finding a loophole haha.

Congrats to all the winners and great job judges! Celebrated my wins at the craft beer market in Calgary. Now I'm drunk on four ounce samples.

Congrats everyone! I was just wondering if/when the actual score sheets will be emailed to the participants. This was my first competition and I am really interested in hearing some feedback.
I didn't win any medals, but I did have a Southern Brown score 40 points! (I was able to get my scores from the login page) That's a win in my book for my first comp.

40 is a fantastic score! There must have been some stiff competition in that category.BassetHoundBrewer wrote:Congrats everyone! Thanks to everyone who was involved in organizing the event. Competitions are A TON of work. I'm happy to have participated, I'm originally from Halifax, but have been living in Ottawa for the last five years, so this one was a little close to me.

40 is a great score. 39.5 didn't land me anything for my Porter, but 42.5 took gold for my APA.Curb-Dog wrote:40 is a fantastic score! Once you get to the 40 point mark. It's difficult to get above that, you need one really special beer.

Bahaha! Of the 3 I submitted, the beer that I like the best scored the lowest.

That happened to me too, my altbier is one of my current favourites, but only scored a 29.5. I'll be interested to see the score sheets, it probably wasn't to style, but there may be flaws I just didn't notice.

Re: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015
I would have bet money that if one of my two entries were to win anything it would have been my brown. Of course it pulled 28 points and my IPA (38.5) gets a silver. I'm thinking it may not have been to style and am eyeing the 2015 BJCP style guidelines hoping they will be friendlier because I think it's good beer!

Re: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015
A good beer can easily score around 30, if it doesn't fit the style. I wasn't involved in the judging so can't comment on the scores, but generally even the best beer would likely only get 35-36 if it had anything significant off from the style

Re: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015
One thing that I've learned in these competitions is that a good or even great beer can sometimes score low depending on a lot of factors. First of all it could just be a bad bottle. Packaging is hard. There are other factors including the environment, the order of the flight, palet fatigue, etc.
However the opposite is usually not true, meaning a bad beer probably won't get a good score.

Re: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015
As one of the judges, don't be afraid to ask me via email for help to read my shitty writing, or explain something I wrote, if I judged one of your beers. It may be difficult to remember each and every one, but I try to give feedback that is useful and descriptive. That's not to say it *always* happens, but I try!
I believe that it's OK to post scoresheets, but please hide the judge's personal info.

When should we expect the scoresheets? I'm in no crazy rush but want to improve my IIPA to get in the 40's. 35.5 has a lot of room for improvement and want to nail it.

Re: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015
OK, I'm a little confused...
The site only has scores for 1 of 3 of my entries, but also says payment is still due. I have an email from paypal saying that my payment has been received.
Does this mean my beers were never judged, since the site thinks I never paid?
Edit: My bank shows payment processed May 6/15
Edit 2: I entered to make sure the Brewnosers were well represented. I wasn't too concerned about medals. The one score that is listed is 41 for my IPA, which I'm quite happy with not in the medals in a deep category, but if Mumblecrunch says his 38.5 takes silver, it makes me wonder what's up.

Regarding the score, large categories were divided between tables to be judged and scored. Each table chose a couple for a mini best of show where the head judges of said tables got together to decide 1st/2nd/3rd/etc. So since they were scored by different groups you could technically score higher than someone who beat you.

Regarding your missing scores I'll send you an email to see if we can straighten it out. I inputed the scores and if there was a score from a judged beer it went into the system. Not sure why yours are marked as not paid. There were fuck ups along the way but most were dealt with. There are a couple possibilities.

Is the Grand Prize still to get your beer packaged and distributed by Best case? Not sure a Grape Lambic would be designed for their targeted audience.

LOL yeah. I figured BOS beers might not make good / reproducable kit beers.Keith wrote:Is the Grand Prize still to get your beer packaged and distributed by Best case? Not sure a Grape Lambic would be designed for their targeted audience.
Grape kool-aid and acidulated malt? Maybe challenge the brewer to make the kit?

Well said. It's definitely an interesting experience watching the whole competition from a stewarding perspective. It gives you a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into judging.RubberToe wrote:Regarding the score, large categories were divided between tables to be judged and scored.
