First time boil kit

Post by Maccan Man » Thu Jun 18, 2015 8:39 pm

I am looking for some info on beer kits. I have just done a couple Festa Brew Kits and feeling comfortable enough to to try a boil kit. I would like to do a grain kit like a boil in a bag kit. I am in the Amherst, NS area so would like to Know of some good kits that I can pick up around here or in Moncton area.

Check out Everwood Ave Brewshop for his partial grain kits, or Noblegrape for the Bestcase kits. Dave is probably the cheaper of the 2. :cheers2:

They are if they're fresh.

Is there a date on the kit or should you ask when they got them in to see if they are fresh or not? @ Jeff Smith

Will they ship kits? Is it just online or do they have a store?

I've been brewing the Best Case kits for about 9 months now. I've made palatable beer each time, but have noted variances with their behavior from batch to batch which may or may not be the kits . . . it could be me.

I've wanted to switch to Everwood's kits for a while now for a host of reasons, but they are harder to get (I don't get down to Hali often). Also, I'm a cheap SOB and have so far balked at the $10 shipping as I buy my kits one or two at a time. I'm in River Hebert and would be interested in pooling orders with you to save us both a bit on shipping charges from Everwood if you want to try those kits.

If you decide to use the Best Case kits feel free to PM me for my ph#, I'll share all I've learned about them with you.

For 2 average kits Dave sells /w shipping you'd be looking at around $70 delivered. Aren't Bestcase kits in around $40-45 each? Even with shipping seems like the better deal saving you $5-10 per kit delivered to your door additionally saving you time and the cost of fuel.

Keith,

I assumed (quite wrongly) shipping from Everwood would be via Acadian Bus w/ pick up in Amherst. Don't know why I was unable to think that alternate shipping methods were offered. Regarding price . . . .BC just went up $5 each. They now run $40 to $50 for a 23l kit, depending on what you buy. Their BIPA - as an example - is $50 / kit out-the-door. The comparable kit from Everwood is $43.50 + shipping which Everwood estimates to be $15.00 via Canada Post to my door. The flat rate shipping STARTS at $10 and varies from there depending what you buy I guess.

Here's a C&P off his site for the one kit search I did . . . . .
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Black IPA Kit - Extract - 5 or 6 Gallons
+ Upgrade to a 6 gallon (23 litre) kit: $3.99
+ Crush the Grains: $0.00
+ Priming Sugar (4 oz): $0.49

Total = $43.50

I've done both NG and Everwood kits and there's really no difference quality-wise. Dave's kits are made to order, but you can do the same thing with NG - you just have to call it in that day and they'll throw it together for you then. One item of difference is that NG's kits all call for a 30 minute boil and the hops are increased accordingly. Dave's kits call for a 60 minute boil, which is fine, but I'd recommend holding back a lot of the extract until the end to prevent some of that weird scorched extract flavour.

If you put the NG kits together yourself, there's a discount. They also have a Brewnosers discount (as does Dave).

Regardless, if your methods are good (sanitation, fermentation temp, etc.) then the beer will turn out. That's been my experience anyway!

Cheers! :cheers2:
