Help identifying a corkscrew

Post by LeafMan66_67 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 5:28 pm

While at Luckett's vineyard this weekend we saw this device in a display of corkscrews - can anyone identify the corkscrew and explain how this one is used? The "fingers" are all numbered. Sorry we don't have a better picture. Let me know.

Thanks,

Is there a picture?

My guess would be it's actually a bunch of different size corkscrews that stack together. But that's purely a guess.

That's what I was basing one of my Google searches on earlier.

My Chemistry degree finally pays off! It looks like a cork boring set to me. For putting different-sized holes in corks. I'm not exactly sure why they'd have them at the winery, maybe for boring out a bung, filling the barrel after it's lost its Angel Share, and then resealing? Boring works much better than drilling in cork (think of it as a hole punch versus a drill bit or hole saw).

Thanks Chris! The set was part of a large display of historical corkscrews and other instruments. This one had us baffled and Pete himself was being a bit facetious with us at the time.

No problem, happy to help. Hope you won a bet with the wife over it. Or maybe sell her the answer. ;)
