US-Only items
Anyone have any idea on how to get things from the US that don't ship to Canada? I've been waiting a few months for the kindle paperwhite to become available here, and a couple weeks for the nexus 4, but while both are available in the the US, neither are in Canada. Anyone know of any solutions? i've heard something about getting stuff shipped to maine... i might be going thru there soon....

Haven't tried it, but this very topic just came up on another forum I frequent.

Apparently the UPS stores will allow you to ship items to them and they will hold them for you..

We did this for a bunch of our brewery stuff. We used Ace Hardware is Calais, Maine (right across the border), a lot of it was from amazon too. Was reasonable prices and easy to deal with, check out kinek.com if you go this route.
Depending on how desperate you are to get it you may want to try one of the mail forwarding services that will re-ship it to you, since amazon usually has free shipping in the US, the price might not be too too bad (ive never used any though).

yeah, i was thinking it might be a good excuse to swing thru the states on my way home from toronto, if my plans work out. the one in Calais is what i'd heard of before i think. though it looks like they have one in houlton, which would be even more convenient. thanks for the link!AllanMar wrote:We did this for a bunch of our brewery stuff. Re: US-Only items
I've used Kinek before in a couple of different states. Very reasonable prices ($5/package).
IN FACT, I will probably be going to Calais in one week, so if you can order it that quickly, I could pick it up. Contact me via email.

Come to think of it double check into Calais, I seem to recall there was some notice that USPS was enforcing some rule so you had to goto the post office and fill out paperwork before packages could be delivered to them. Also keep in mind they're pretty strict about the person it is addressed to picking it up (may be possible to make other arrangement).
EDIT: Found it
EDIT: Found it
Calais Kinekers must fill out 1583 form
This is an important message to all Kinek users that ship to either Calais Ace Homecenter or AN Deringer in Calais, Maine. The local USPS office in Calais has enforced their regulation that a 1583 form will need to be filled out at your KinekPoint by November 1st, 2012. To be clear, the form cannot be faxed or emailed, it must be the original and filled out at your KinekPoint. Your KinekPoint will have the form ready for you to fill out at their location. It consists of basic name and address information, as well as 2 pieces of identification.
We have been advised by the postmaster in Calais that any packages delivered via USPS or UPS will be held at the post office after November 1st if a form is not filled out. Kinek is doing its best to work with USPS to ensure everyone has this file filled out correctly and that all their regulations are met.
We apologize if this does cause you to make an extra trip to Calais. If you have something to purchase online, we suggest doing it now as packages will be sent to your KinekPoint in Calais before November 1st without the form being filled out.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

You might try this place http://shippingtocalais.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. We have a similar one out here called "Ship Happens". They charge $5 for a package.

Re: US-Only items
My old man uses PAC electronics in Houlton for receiving stuff (mostly car parts). He pays something like $20-30/year for a PO Box, and they will accept ANYTHING. If it doesn't fit in the box, it costs an extra $1 CDN. I chatted with the owner one day, and he said that they've accepted motorhomes, boats..etc (all for $1).
You can arrange for them to receive something even if you don't have a box there. I'm not sure how much it is, but likely not very much.
Couple of people discuss them here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/canada ... ers-3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's also a beer/wine speciality store close by. It looks awful from the outside, but the beer selection is pretty decent! They accept cash only (or at least used to): http://www.ratebeer.com/p/the-thirsty-d ... ton/30328/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
