Compromised Credit Card
It looks like someone had a little bit of fun with my credit card recently. I have a BNS Passport Gold Visa and their security department called me this morning to verify a recent charge on my account. The charge was from Emirates Airlines and the charge was for $10,100.
. Needless to say I verified that it was my purchase nor did I authorize it. Cards have been cancelled, but at least new ones will arrive tomorrow. Freakin' bastards, I hope they had fun!

Had that happen on one of my cards a while back. They purchased items from the US Mint

First class ticket with Emirates Airlines maybe. You don't recognise that woman? she's looking a little smug!

That sucks. It's happened to me before, though they didn't purchase anything so extravagant. It was all Telus mobile talk time cards and online video rentals (not XXX thankfully).

you'd think they could track the online purchases... supposedly they often buy big ticket electronics and then sell them on kijiji and craigslist for quick cashjeffsmith wrote:

I've had these kinds of things happen to me many times. It sucks.
I'm done with credit card companies. Plan on getting rid of my last credit card in two weeks.

Re: Compromised Credit Card
Can't say that I share your point of view, Jamie.
If my wallet is stolen with a credit card inside, I can call the CC company and get any charges reversed. Any cash that's in the wallet is long gone.
I'm a big fan of plastic for that reason. Plus, I'm a points-collecting guy, which has paid for several trips/hotels/rental cars, so I always feel like I'm missing out if I don't use my card.
Or maybe you mean you're going to a debit card for everything? That would eliminate the first issue I mentioned, but I don't know of any that will give you points.

Unless I'm mistaken and the website is wrong/out of date, that's only when using it at a Superstore/Loblaw's/No Frills. Their credit card will earn you points wherever you shop.jeffsmith wrote:PC Financial's debit card gives you PC Points.chalmers wrote:Or maybe you mean you're going to a debit card for everything? Re: Compromised Credit Card
I'm the same as you, Chris. I have a BNS Passport Gold card and I use it for virtually everything as I collect the points for traveling. Since I'd be spending the money anyway, I may as well earn points for free travel. I was supposed to pay for an order yesterday from EverwoodAve and DME but am holding off paying for it later today when my new card arrives. I don't want to miss out on the points.chalmers wrote:Can't say that I share your point of view, Jamie.

Re: Compromised Credit Card
I've been using my ccs exclusively for ten or more years, the rewards and privileges outweigh the hassle of of once having my card copied. I'm spending the money I may as well get as much as I can for what I spend. It's like using coupons or coupons codes, why wouldn't you take advantage and get as much for your $$$ as possible

Re: Compromised Credit Card
If you buy on ebay lots (like I do) a cc is a must IMO... I've been scammed a few times. Paypals claim system is useless, so if you use a debit card, kiss your money goodbye. Credit card companies on the other hand will strong arm PayPal and give you the money back.

I guess the reason is because I plan on spending less and saving more over the next few years. I find credit cards to be a trap for spending.

that's why they're so profitable, even after giving the points away. You have to be disciplined to use them rightsleepyjamie wrote:I guess the reason is because I plan on spending less and saving more over the next few years. I find credit cards to be a trap for spending.
I use my RBC rewards points to purchase RRSPs every year. I get the same return/point as travel, but the added bonus of a tax refund for that extra little bump. That's the best use of rewards points IMO

Re: Compromised Credit Card
You're right, having a (seemingly, until the bill comes in) unlimited source of funds in one's pocket can be tempting, but I credit my folks with instilling in me a healthy respect for money. Plus, I'm so boring and cheap, I never spend beyond my means.

That’s a good idea (giving up credit cards and getting out of the spending trap), but there are a few problems with the plan, that have been mentioned above. Another point is you have to come up with a month’s worth expense money right away, since with visa, you pay for things a month later.
Is there a compromise that you would accept? For example keep a credit card and only use it for non-discretionary purchases, such as gas at the pump and brewing supplies. Those are the only ones I can think of just now but there might be others.
Can you build priorities into the plan. Life is supposed to be for having fun, so could a night on the town be included in the non-discretionary credit card worthy expenses…a vacation? And budget accordingly.
