A few more pics. This is a LONNNNGG element. If it weren't for the distance from the edge of the keggle to the end of the ferrule it may have even touched the side of the keg on the other side.

Gonna try to sling a cord on it over the weekend. I'm thinking of putting a long enough extension cord on it to brew out on the back deck this summer. I love brewing outside when it's nice.

After chatting with Chalmers today I think I'm going to re-jigger my CFC and buy a pump to complete this setup. I'm also thinking of a weldless thermometer.

Great to chat with you and M today. As I said, even with bazooka screen or hop rocket, we were clogging our plate chiller, so we were happy to get away from that. Might be something screwy we were doing, who knows!

I'm considering the benefits of chopping those legs down to just allow a little clearance for an elbow and the ball valve to run straight out the side. Since I don't have a pump I'm wondering how I'm going to get a gravity drain from my mash tun into Ivan without burning my face off. If the legs were only say 6" from the base I could still use it on a table or counter top.

So I'm at an impasse in this project. I have a slight leak in the ferrule (a very, very slow drip coming from the edge of the ferrule). I was thinking of using my torch to reheat the silver solder and allow it to reset itself but I have no flux in hand. Can this work? I'm also weighing the necessity of 10 gallon batches at the moment. Space is tight at my house and I'm not sure if I want to put even more money into this for a pump setup when my current system works great. Decisions...

If this will work, I have a little flux and silver solder you can use

But you are busy with family etc. If you do 10 gal batches you will spend half the time brewing. Unless you end up giving more away ...which can happen.

Both things happen to me, but being able to brew more, less often is why I do 10 gallons. It's not always ideal (for things like IPA/IIPA's especially), but I like having two kegs of every beer I brew to rotate into the keezer.

Oh and Mark. I brewed with rye malt yesterday in a small batch and it did a number on my element. Make sure you're stirring hole heating

Got the elbow all hooked up. I'm a pump and some silicone tubing away from a test batch

So my thoughts on this are twofold
A) attach an OBK brew Pump to this ball valve via camlock, then run through the counterflow chiller into the fermenter
B) same setup but instead of using counterflow assemble a whirlpool port at the top of the kettle and use immersion chiller I already have.

I'd use the immersion chiller if it was me.
If you're running a whirlpool an immersion chiller will chill quite fast, it's easier to clean, can be sanitized by dropping it in the boil, and you know it's clean when you look at it - no guessing on what is hiding inside the counterflow chiller!

I may sell my plate CHILLER and invest in a larger immersion coil. That way I can still brew in my laundry room

I brewed with this setup on Monday. It worked well, but I've confirmed my desire to lower the kettle. I also hooked up a cool mod thanks to Mark (bluenose) and I co-ordering from OBK
I found that gravity draining and having the cooler 5+ feet off the ground was a PITA so I rigged my pump up to a camlock system. I put a camlock on the cooler as well so I can swap it from vessel to vessel.
My plate chiller from OBK worked phenomenal and even with a hop bag clamped to the side I was never in any danger of clogging either the chiller or the pump. That being said I'm almost certain the immersion chiller route will be for me long term. I love the Plate Chiller but It's getting away from the minimalist setup I had in mind (especially the hoses and cleaning). Look for it to pop up in the classifieds section soon...
